L Series 6's are in half of nissans vehicles.... if you wanna have a 5 speed box too go buy yourself an old skyline for $200......
$100 for a motor sure beats "buy a new car to replace it" for a diesel.
I will never understand diesel people, but I suppose they have to have something to keep them amused....

I can understand buying a diesel if you buy the car new and want to keep it for a long time (although i dunno how many people who buy new cars dont want a replacement new car in a few years), but I think the financial risks in an old diesel are too high, unless you're prepared for a potential engine swap down the track.
Of course, if you recognise all those funny noises that diesels can make and can tell the bad ones from the good, then it's probably ok... but I don't so to me a diesel is a handgrenade with the pin already pulled, just like a 2 stroke motorbike, but heaps more expensive to fix.
Quotes of $13000 to rebuild a GU diesel, or $5000 for injector replacement (eg Landrover) are not uncommon.
Given the likely time that a person is gonna own a car, I can't see that the difference in fuel economy is gonna justify the purchase price differential unless you pull 40,000 k's + per year, even considering the higher resale value.
Having been stung on an LPG conversion which I thought would be justifiable but never got the mileage to recover costs before writing off the car just adds to the perception that diesels are overpriced gutless smoky smelly slow heaps of crap.
Paying Wrecker prices of $3000 for an SD 33 (non turbo), $1500 for a SD 33 5 speed and $300 or more for a 24V alternator also adds to the diesel experience.
Maybe everyone I know with a diesel (Nissan or Toyota) has been unlucky buying a second hand diesel but all of them have found it to be a huge money pit.
One of my mates had an SD motor spare, but I cant remember what it was. It was the SD25 I think, he's got the 33 as his main engine for his 720.
Toonfish if you think you can get an SD 33 Turbo motor fur under $3000 you're dreaming.....
Best bet is to find someone wreckign a rustbucket in the trading post.
