exhaust question

Post by GQ Bear »

Years ago i got a 2 & 1/2" exhaust and extractors fitted to GQ wagon. About a year ago exhaust cracked at muffler welded join so i had to cut it off as it was rattling around and eventually broke and dug into the ground. So since then exhaust has stopped half way under truck just past gearbox cross member.

Still has cat but no 2nd muffler and was never too loud and no fumes entered vehicle, wasn't a real problem.

Anyway on Sunday up at Gembrook coppers were checking licenses, regos, etc. on bikes and 4by's and i think i copped a canary for exhaust. He said he'd send notice in mail.

What i want to know is it is legal to use stainless flexible tube hoseclamped to existing exhaust or does it have to be proper exhaust tube bent up and welded, etc? Remembering i may have to show vehicle to VicRoads, not just RWC from a friendly mechanic ;)

Thanks
Bear

BTW, any exhaust fitters on this forum who'd help me out with a cheap fit out of last 1/3rd of exhaust on gQ wagon. Nothing flash req'd, just roadworthy.

The flexy tube will cost more than getting a professional to fix it for good

If its just hose clamped on I think it's illegal. I have a slip join in my commodore so I can fit a side exit race muffler for track days and heard it's illegal. If you put a flange and gasket join in there it should be right. You got canaried becuase the exhaust must exit rearward of the last door opening and seam/join on the body of the vehicle. Seriously if you just want a piece of pipe it will cost bugger all to get welded on, less than stuffing around makng a flexible hose legal.

You would have copped the canary then and there...but if they didn't have the time or expertise and thought there was a RW issue with your vehicle they can post a document under section 13 of the Road Safety Act 1986 requesting that the vehicle be brought into a nominated place for inspection.

During that inspection if faults are located then the 'canary' is affixed and the defect notice issued.

Another option opened to the member is to forward an EPA notice for follow up inspection by the EPA if they suspect the exhaust is too loud.......PM me if you want me to make some enquiries about your execution date :D

Better than our local Hastings copper who canaries 2006 Navaras on 33's, hard when some coppers make life much harder than it need be. I wish he'd go work out who broke into the workshop around the corner from us, and do something useful.
