I used to have drums under them too. Running 4.875. I changed out to a Gen 2 3.0 V6 rear axle with factory lockers.
As for lifting it cheap, use HDPE or teflon blocks and good high tensile bolts and nuts to lift the body. 2" and you can squeeze in 33". With a 2" rear shackle lift, then it'll be more ideal.
