Spare Wheel Carrier Catch's

G'day everyone , I'm building a steel rear bar for my Patrol Wagon & was wanting some help on were to get catch's for the wheel carriers. Any help would be muchly appreciated.

I got mine @ a trailer place in tuggerah, google trailer spares at tuggerah. they were about 25 bucks each. under locks and latchs on web page last item i think.

A place here in victoria called schutties fasteners has a fantastic catch which i used on mine, its an over-centre catch i think theyre called, spring loaded.
Heres a pic:

Can anyone see an issue with simply using a lynch pin system similar to that used in a tractor 3 point linkage set up? Using the above picture as a guide, if you were to substitute the curved hook with a 16 to 25mm hole, then weld a piece of round bar of the same dia as the hole through the rear bumper - drill the right sized hole in the bar to take the lynch pin - all done. Not as flash as the fancy catches, but at $2 a lynch pin.....(hope this crude description makes sense?)
Just a thought. Happy to hear what others may think.

It would work and would propably be even safer than my setup for coming open when a stick jams in there or something, but it would be a pain in the ass i would imagine to keep having to take a pin in and out whenever you want access to the back.

How stronger hold does the over-center latch have? I.e. could you tug the carrier open by hand/leg if you really tried? I understand the latch itself would have to flex somwhat before it comes undone, but would it be possible?

I used a slam shut latch on mine, costs about $30 and is the same sort of thing used on car doors so is two stage and has a very high load rating.

Supercheap here in town has them, as well as the 4wd parts shop in Auckland St, or the trailer parts place in Toolooa St, where Tyrepower used to be, opposite the Shell servo.

Dogbreath you could pull on the carrier till the cows come home, the carrier would bend and break before the latch would ever unfasten.

Your catch looks like it works really well, did you need to mod/make much to make it work ??

I made the handle but it came with the pin. I made th bar as well as the carrier so it was easy enough to set it up. I got it from http://www.conceptlatch.com.au it's an Eberhard Passenger restraint latch.

Yep the 400 was the one, they do one with a handle but it has to come from the states so I just decided to make th handle. I also put a spring on the handle to keep spme load on it so it couldn't rattle open however unlikely that would be.

Just saw that the trailer place on Toolooa St is now a marine place, boats and all, so you can probably give them a miss.
I dont know if Lister Motors still sells trailer parts. I think they are over in Young St, between the 2 railway lines, on the way over to Barney Point.

Yeah , went there yesterday, they've moved to Lister Motors. Picked up the catches for $35 ea, same type as in the pic near the start of the thread.

As pictured above by PJzook I have been looking for that exact latch for ages to no avail.

I finally tracked it down to a company in Sandgate NSW called OVESCO P/L. Ph #02 49671688.

The part # 1138.14 (throw over catch ) $21 each + freight

I ordered mine over the phone at 3pm yesterday and had it sitting on my doorstep when I got home today. Blood good service if you ask me and im hard to impress.

The supplied ctaches are very well made and due to their excellent design there is no chance of them working loose at all.

If the catch is the same as mine, just a few hints that i found made life easier. I hammered flat the eyelet which was deliberately bent, i also ground down the leading edge of the eyelet as i found it kept getting caught on the edge of the hole i drilled in the carrier that sat over the hooked pin.

Thanks for the hints PJ. Will check it out when I get to that part of the project ( hopefully this weekend)
