mq crawler gears

Post by rob_rover »

does anyone know if you can get mq/mk transfer case gears or do i have to go bigger ratio diff gears, now running mk shroty, 355, turbo 700, 4.625 gears, 36" simex and lockers. first gear doesn't seem low enough, or do i change to manual gear box? what gear will fit and handle the power?

There are no gearsets available for the MQ / MK series.

Some people have overcome this by using toyota stuff and an addaptor to run the yota transfer.

The manual 5spd box will give you the lowest gearing using the standard nissan stuff

This is what I thought....
But apartently there is a gear set available. Someone called "rick" off this forum had a set cut for around $1400 I'm led to belive.
I haven't had any confirmation of this but seems a little cheap for a one-off. A t/case was advertised recently here.
The nissan 5spd is the same ratio's as the 4spd, just with the extra gear on the end.
A nissan cabstar or caball 5spd off an ED33 has a lower first gear and bolts straight up, I was told by John at Dellow the the t/case then bolts straight to that

I agree, V8patrol definatly knows his shit, and I have asked him for info many a time before, But as far as I can find, using search  and other various sources the only difference I can find is input shaft sizes, apart from p40 boxes, somehow they were different?
flame suit on, correct me if I'm wrong.

I also spoke to him and was going to buy as it was just the t/case that was reduced, however I couldn't find anything anywhere on it, or anyone willing to cut some for less then a small fortune so I decided to go the cabstar route as you know the gearing and exact ratio's, So am now on the prowl....

I think you'll find that Dellow do an adaptor from a turbo 700 to Land Cruise 60's T-case, then ya can put 45% reduction gears in that.

my MQ has a 60s T-case with 68% reduction.

The last time I messed around with ratios I found there were two 4-speed boxes and two 5-speed. My original P40 4 speed (1982) had a final ratio of 3.519 and my replacement 5 speed out of a diesel (or turbo diesel?) was 3.897. But there is also a 4 speed and a 5 speed both with with 4.222.

The only difference with the P40 box that I noticed was that the input shaft is shorter because of the longer engine and fatter than the diesel which I substituted. Interestingly (but off topic) the P40 4 speed used a light alloy bell housing whereas the 5 speed diesel used a heavier steel housing. I assumed this was because of the extra stresses arising from the greater engine-gearbox "span" with the 5 speed but I would not have thought the extra 100mm or so would have made a lot of difference.

this is about the best combination you can make up.

Is there a manuel g/baox that the cruiser t/case can be adapted to?

Gear ratios for the nissan 3 spd box.. Yes they are out there

1st.....2.900 to 1
2nd....1.562 to 1
3rd.....1.000 to 1
REV....4.015 to 1

Typical transfer ratio(split case)
high....1.000 to 1
low.....2.264 to 1

Generally however the MQ's & MK's had either the ..........
F4w81A ( 4 speed)
or the
FS5W81A (5 speed)

NB:
The 'F' stands for Floorshift, some vehicles may have a R4w81A, The 'R' means its a Remoteshift.... IE columb shift
Auotmatic transmissions are identified in the same way.... either 'R' or 'F'
;)

ratios are as follows...

F4W81A
4th..........1.000:1
3rd..........1.449:1
2nd..........2.157:1
1st...........3.519:1
Reverse....4.181:1

FS5W81A
5th..........0.825:1
4th..........1.000:1
3rd..........1.440:1
2nd..........2.370:1

*engine with turbo*
1st..........3.897:1
Reverse...4.267:1

*engine without turbo*
1st..........4.222:1
reverse...4.622:1

The Cabstar 5spd ratios ...

1st: 4.818
2nd: 2.620
3rd: 1.429
4th: 1.000
5th: 0.777
Rev: 4.818
Final ratio: 3.700 ( std diff )

NB:
The F23 Cabstar (1993 onwards) came with one of the following transmissions:
RS5W71C behind the NA20S engine 7/92-5/94
RS5W81A behind the TD25 engine 7/92-5/94
RS5W81A behind all 5/94-5/98
RS5R91A behind all 5/98-11/02

The 5W71C has a one-piece bell-housing and case, there is an adapter plate between the main housing and the rear extension, and the rear extension is nearly as long as the main housing. The fill is on the left, and there no provision for a PTO.
The 5W81A has a separate bell housing and case, a rectangular PTO output (bit taller than wide) on the left side and a right-side fill. The rear housing is also nearly as long as the main case.
The 5R91A has a separate bell housing and main case, a right-side fill, a semi-rectangular (rounded top/bottom) left-side PTO, and the rear case is considerably shorter than the main case.

Two transfers are also availiable for the MQ / MK, the
T130A
and the
T100L

Ratios are......

T130A
High.........1.000:1
low...........2.220:1

T100L
high..........1000:1
low...........2.074:1

As you can see by "mixing & matching" you can get the 'crawl' down to an almost aceptable level and retain the std diffs, however if its still not low enough the only other options are to go with either a GQ gearbox & transfer ( fitted with crawler gearsets ) and run the GQ diffs...... which equals heaps of work ..... you'll be thinking of a coil conversion before you know it !!! , or to run the 60series transfer via an addaptor to your box (T700)

Marks may do other addaptors for other boxes...... ring em

The diesel shaft is shorter ...about 10mm shorter than the petrol input shaft, the diesel shaft is also slightly bigger in its diameter.
The splines are also located on the shaft in differing areas and are different in their length of cutting.

The petrol clutchplate wont work on a diesel box and vise-versa

The heaviest clutchplate available as a std nissan clutchplate is the 1999 TDI plate...... this plate WILL handle a grumpy V8 with ease :D
NB: use the Holden V8 RED motor flywheel and the HZ Holden 'towpak' pressureplate .....
This is the Largest diameter setup using this combination you can achive, basically it equals an 11" clutch which is whats 'accepted' as standard for chevys.
