Hi everyone im a rover person (i own a rangie) i was wondering wat can u do with a sierra as in engine wise (im lookin to buy one sometime in da future cos of fuel costs etc). Im thinking wen i do get it i want to put a sr20 turbo engine (out of a mates rite off 180sx) in jus wondering if its possible and wat u would have to change to make it fit, power wise( wat sort of power will the gearboxes handle until they blow up same as diifs etc) etc etc. The engine produces bout 200 horsepower but i might have to bring that down cos of power to weight ratio.
Cheers Azza

sr 20 turbo engine
Here we go....
Seriously, why? Why does a sierra need 200hp?
You can do almost anything in a sierra - even small block chev, but that doesn't mean its a good idea.
Sierras have terrible handling, brakes and stability and were never designed for more than 67hp. I can easily outdrive the chassis of my sierra with a 660cc motor.
If you want to go with lots of motor, you'll need to keep the height and roll stiffness well under control and start with a LWB, and calm it right down with an auto.
Start with an SR20DE if you want a drivable car but they are really hard to fit. Joey in our club ran a manual in a SWB and it was great at idle, but it was hard to control the HP. When he went auto/lwb it seemed to drive very nicely- seems quite easy to drive off road.
If you really want over 200hp, start with a LWB vitara - lower, more stable and much better suited to high HP.
Other options include 4AGE's in a N/A configuration, or 3RZFE hilux 2.7 - very high torque and relatively low HP.
High HP and torque will result in broken axles etc if you run decent tyres and use it off road. Once you go to bigger axles (and all heavier stuff involved in the engine swap) much of the advantage of the sierra is lost and IMHO you'd be better starting with a more powerful car in the first place.
Seriously, 100hp is plenty for a usable car.
Steve.

Hey all thanks for the feed bak!!
I dnt think i will do it might turn into a nightmare replacin axles etc(im a leadfoot lol) i was jus wonderin cos ma grandpa has a masuki ( a ute wif a suzuki front cos they live on a farm) and its got a 900cc motor and its dead slow i was jus makin comparisin. Another Question how hard is it to swap a chassis cos ma grandpas one (thinkin of buyin it) masuki's chassis is rustin out, everythin else is fine on it. Motor done 80,000kms serviced every 5,000kms gear box still changes nice a smooth and drives really nice(no vibrations etc) hes gonna sell it to me for 2 grand lol.
Cheers Azza

is it hard to change chassis cos i will get one frm da wreckers
and wats the difference between wt and nt
Its almost as hard as using correct spelling and grammar.
Chassis swap is simple if you have a bit of mechanical knowledge and good tools. But the challenge is finding another LWB chassis to swap the gear on to. Though if the chassis is rusting, i would bet that the body would be in simillar condition. Maybe the paint is just hiding it.Check under the flares and around the sills. As for motor swap, if its only got the 1L in it, look for a vitara 1.6L injected motor, or a 1.3L injected motor from a jimny or Baleno. Much better conversion, and will net much better power than it currently, and much more control of that power.
Layto....
