Patrol or Landcruiser??

Patrol or Landcruiser??
I am after a 4WD to store at the coast shack. It is required to tow a boat general bush bashing and beach work. Probably only 3-5000 km a year.
I like the look of the SWB stuff but not that concerned. Looking to spend $3-5K hopefully.
Do I want petrol or diesel and or turbo?
Which size/combo motors go the best?
How do 4.5l petrol compare to diesels in the same size?
Considering I am not too concerened about fuel costs (distance travelled)will LPG be more of a hinderance than worth.
Should I look to Landcruiser or Patrol in the price range above. Most things have done around 300t plus km. Landcruisers of the 85 vintage seem to be 5sps versus 4 in patrols is the 5 better.
Thanks

if your not driving too far, nissans cost less for the equivelent model.
toyota's of the same year drive better than patrols. propbably cop a flaming for that, but it's true.
due to rust, don't get a 40/55 series, and if you get a 60 series cruiser... expect to bog the roof every few years
.
dunno where patrols rust, not into them.
petrols are better value than diesels unless your crossing the simpson desert. they'll tow better. with or without lpg is your call. personally i've never had an "lpg" issue that wasn't due to neglect. same neglect that would see a petrol system have issues. but for short trips, petrol won't sting you too badly.

Sorry then guys.HeathGQ wrote:this question is asked ever weekj-top paj wrote:wasnt this question asked and discussed a couple days ago?
Maybe a link could be good. Especially one from a couple of days ago.
As I cant find from a search. I could be putting in the wrong words as I get 100 pages returned to read through that are not what I am after.
I am only new and so far the advice has been great.
I have a couple of days ago asked about autos and patrols but through further looking into these vehicles I am discovering so many variants that peoples past experiences may put me in the right direction.
I know some of you guys have been on here for ages and would have seen every thread as they generate however for me just getting here there is a huge amount of info to wade through. I appreciate how doubling up may piss you off so give us the link to prove me in the wrong.
Cheers
nah im serious, i remember someone asking about putting a boat somewhere at a coast shack for his boat etc..HeathGQ wrote:this question is asked ever weekj-top paj wrote:wasnt this question asked and discussed a couple days ago?
and bogged made a comment about lifting it for using at the boat ramp or something...
i just cant seem to find it

Yeah that was me. In particular was asking about SWB auto Patrol. I got one reply however now I am really asking between Patrol and Landrcruiser and which motor variant. Petrol or Diesel. Turbo or big block. Its all so confusing. I am leading towards 4.2 petrol. Moved the thread to this general area instead of the Nissan area for some more view points of which I have achieved.j-top paj wrote:nah im serious, i remember someone asking about putting a boat somewhere at a coast shack for his boat etc..HeathGQ wrote:this question is asked ever weekj-top paj wrote:wasnt this question asked and discussed a couple days ago?

Hopefully when I make an informed decision and learn some I can help others.
All good.
for that money id get a 4.2 gq petrol.
mainly because a cruiser in that price will be a 60 and the gq has coils wich are far more comfy on the sand/ corrogations
dont waste your time with a diesel as you dont drive it enough to worry bout fuel costs and non turbo diesels suck ass on sand
if its just a beach type truck dont worry so much bout the cab more look for good running gear as no matter what you do its gunna rust n fall apart either way
also look for a white one as then when it does rust lil fibre bog n appliance white and she apples for a few more years

have u considered a pajero? will be a bit cheaper too.
how much weight do u need to tow and for what distance?

Yeah Pajeros could be OK. Maybe Motors seem small. I have been offered a V6 Pajero for 3.5K. I will be towing around 1.2 T. Only for up to 60Km round trips and less. Maybe occasional longer distances but would use my XR6 for that if need be.j-top paj wrote:have u considered a pajero? will be a bit cheaper too.

I guess there is two trains of thinking smaller motors could be fine as not needing to go any great distance but since fuel is no issue I can go big. What I am after is something that can do some work and have fun in as well. It does seem that between $3K and $5-6k the quality gets a lot better. Discos seem cheap for what you get but the vibe I get is expensive to run/maintain.
smaller motors = better fuel economy is a phurphey. sure a 1.6litre corolla will get better mileage than a 4 litre falcon. but things like weight/ rolling resistance/ gearing need to be taken into account.grepin wrote:Yeah Pajeros could be OK. towing a big weight with a smaller motor will see you in a lower gear, meaning higher revs, and higehr fuel consumption more often than with a big lazy six. for instance, my 2.8litre toyota crown drank a shedload more than my 4.1 litre Fairlaine, and the crown was even lighter, and had an extra gear in the gearbox.
disco's main problems stem from their wiring. if your good with wires and handy with a spanner, they aren't too expensive to maintain. good value for what you get, but i wouldn't own one as my only means of transport

How about this one. 1981 MQ Patrol. Its a 3 seat convertable. 4.0L injected diesel turbo with 260T km. Has aircon, sunroof, power windows and heavy sus. Seems like a lot of mod cons for its age. Its only 4spd which may let it down touring. I love the concept for the beach with the back off etc.
Was this an actual model or has it been modded? Checking red book now.
Asking price is $4.5K. Link below
Cheers

God of Magnificant Ideas!
All short wheel based MQ's were "convertable"..... they were usually regoed as a 'hard top utility' ( utes being cheaper to regogrepin wrote:How about this one.

its had a motor conversion done...... MQ's came out with either a L28 petrol motor or a SD33 non turbo diesel donk...... the MK ( model after the MQ ) had the SD33 turbo motor.... the 33 stands for 3.3liter engine.grepin wrote:4.0L injected diesel turbo with 260T km.
MK's also had a 5spd box.
as do most of emgrepin wrote:Has aircon,

No ... it has a new set of springs fitted to replace the shagged out old ones !grepin wrote: and heavy sus.
you call "5000Ks a year" touring ????grepin wrote:Seems like a lot of mod cons for its age. Its only 4spd which may let it down touring. I love the concept for the beach with the back off etc.
Most I've ever paid for an MQ was $2000 and it had more gear than you've listed like a winch, diff lockers, bullbar, UHF radio etc etc...grepin wrote:Was this an actual model or has it been modded? Checking red book now.

I've got a resprayed MQ here with fresh 253 V8 in it, All the rust has been cut out bar for one hole in the enginebay, has an all new interior, is duel fuel, bullbar, and I'm asking only $1500 for it as is !, or you can buy my work hack ( SD33 ) for a grand !
for $4.5.... it would want to be MINT with a 3 year roadside warranty

Kingy

Side by side comparison, I have a GQ and an 80 to play with (The 80 belongs to the missus) and I find the GQ to be the more comfortable drive and to ride in, the foot wells seem a bit longer (but also narrower)
The factory seats (Only have passanger side factory) are a fair bit more comfortable than the 80's as well and finally, you'll have a hard time breaking anything in the drive train while touring in a GQ... They're built tough. The other factor that I consider between the two cars is the fact that you can comfortably fit a double air bed in the back of the GQ, while the 80's rear wheel wells obstruct that.
Over to the 80, the 80 is a great truck, you'll get much better fuel economy and outright power out of the 80 series over the GQ... Diesel for Diesel or Petrol for Petrol, the cruiser has the guts every time. Its probably more suited to the touring life than the GQ because while the foot wells are slightly shorter, there is more side to side room and it gives you the ability to stretch out and move around on the longer trips.
The 80 series also carries a bigger fuel load than the GQ.
If you're in the Sydney area, I'd be more than happy to let you have a ride in either car and you can decide yourself.

froon i have both too and have driven heaps of each and i would have to say your 80 is beyond it if you think the gq is comfyier n drives better.
