body lift hints

Post by andy1517 »

guys i have already looked at the how to section and found it to be very helpful. am attempting the lift next week, is there any hints or things to look out for?? am lifting it only 50mm, but have heard things can go wrong.

Any info would be great,
seems relatively simple, only thing im worried about is steering column. dont understand that part...

if you open your bonnet you'll notice the steering shaft that runs from the firewall (just behind your steering wheel) down to your steering box. At the firewall end there is a splined uni joint, and towards the box is a rag joint. (the rubbery circular-disc shaped joint)
You need to undo 2 bolts in rag joint and stick a spacer in there/between them. I just used to bits of 6mm flatbar with 2 holes drilled in each and some longer bolts... (didnt have any 12mm thick stuff) but with 50mm bodylift you'll need to close up a gap of around 10-12mm...

This has been covered previously too, but watch the wiring on the rear tail lights - Its usually not long enough to accommodate a BL, so be sure to have a look there (or you might snap some wires)...

You wanna try add in some box section bracing roughly what runs underneath your seats door to door way. I have seen the inside around the tunnel near the gear box start to sag and crack after a few years on dodgy body lift jobs, especially if you carry alot of stuff or you weigh a bit more than the average bloke... :P Other than that if you got a good hoist with the movable arms it would be a easy job if not four Scissor Jacks work well
..wrench, wheel, wreck repeat..

Yeah, dip it in the ocean and then in 2 years time you can ask us how to repair all the rust that has appeared in your zook... :?

Dont forget to disconnect the fuel hose clamp and the hose protector shield. I think that shield is pop riveted between the body and chassis. When I lifted mine I thought I had everything loose but the pop rivet letting go under the body weight sounded like a 303 going off and I nearly sh*t myself.

oh and undo the rear number plate lights, they will catch as the rear bumper is lifting up and it will break them off...

Body Lift

Before I ever get under my Zook I put on my trusty safety glasses to save my eyes. After copping s#$t in my eyes a few times this makes any job under a Zook just a bit more comfortable.

Just cruizins' instruction sheet is very comprehensive and if followed carefully should be all the help you need.
