Rockhoppers or Marks Gears?

Ok im about to help build a new vehicle for a well known competitor that is entering Tuff Truck again next year and it will be running a single Nissan GQ transfer(no its not a nissan though). It needs reduction gears. Im looking at either the Rock Hoppers at a reduction of 81% or the Marks Gearmasters at 85%. Both are within $50 in price but which one is more value for money? The extra 4% on the marks gears does not make it any more valuable to me.

Build Quality,reliability,supply when needed and customer service makes Value for money to me. If they were a huge difference in price this would also be valuable but at this point in time they are not.

Anyone had any issues with either?

I've been running the Marks gears for about a month now, they're absolutely awesome... Can't attest to strength of longevity, but I'm very happy with my choice.

Not from personal experience, but I have not heard/read of any failures in either in a Nissan application.

I guess ready supply would be your only decision point in this case.

Hi Tony,

we've mainly used the Mark's gears in the Nissans - ever since they released them - and never had any problems. Prior to Mark releasing his gears we used the Rockhopper gears and they were fine also. No problems with either. We still fit Rockhopper gears to the Sierras etc.

Have fitted both and would have to say that the only diffrence would be that gearmaster have a more comprehesive fitting guide.
Very small gripe. If you have fitted any before then the fitting guide is not as Important.

So has anyone heard of any failures at all with either of these gear sets?

Or even Failures in the GQ transfer itself bar running them out of oil.

Cheezy cracked the auto in his mav at XRCC at rover a few years back, didnt damage the tranfer, only tranfer I have seen broken had been in a big roll at high speed, not much left of the GU wagon, front diff was in several peices.

I don't think you could go wrong with either brand personly. I've been running the marks 85% for about 4 years and had know problems and i've never heard of anyone having problems either.

Mark's gears come with instructions. Doesn't sound like a big thing but I have faxed my set to a few people off here who have bought the Rockhopper product and haven't been able to get them in right.

Build quality on the Mark's set is top notch. Have never seen the Rockhopper gears in the flesh.

They are a good case (apart from the sheer bulk) mine has been flogged, mounted upside down, for over 2 years without fault. It did 350,000km on the road before that.
