warn 8274-50, 6HP motor, braced, strengthened brake shaft, bolt through brake shaft. if really keen, then twin motors using flamin fab adaptor or giggle pin twin motor top hat. when you do that you can do new gears and fit air free spool. also add dyneema rope to the list near the top too.
or just get a 10000 pound warn low mount and develop a watercooling system for it and run 24V through it.

What is your budget? A full house 8000 high as mentioned wont be cheap, in the 1000s'DEANO6 wrote:I am chasing advice on what winch to put on my truck, anything will help. I have a Nissan GQ Dual cab and need to no what size winch and how to get the most out of it eg: bigger motors etc.....
are you in it to win, or out there to have fun?
The advantage with a High is the speed it pulls, which if your serious, is what its all about.
Warn 10k would be good too with a 6hp donk...
theres a really great 10k Warn on ebay at moment.

all you need is a plastic bag with a tiny hole in it, so it drip cools the winch motor, too easy and costs fark allchunderlicious wrote: or just get a 10000 pound warn low mount and develop a watercooling system for it and run 24V through it.

warn 8274 will be the best bet. before you go spending huge money building the thing they are pretty good with just a 6HP motor with synthetic rope. just make sure you get the housing braced asap. then when you want more go add 24V to the system and feel the power it makes.
to have a fully built winch can cost 10G or more.

to have a fully built winch can cost 10G or more.[/quote] i know this may sound like a strange question to those who know but why is it so expensive to mod up winches.the winch type events is something i am about to start looking into.i know that there is a range of how powerfull the winch can become but i am curious to know where the bulk of the cost is cheers

I only did my first winch comp last month and all up my winch cost me $6,000 which i thought was cheap. However i built 2 twin motor top hats (one for a mate) and air free spool for $2300. Heaps of work involved though but worth it.
To buy......
8274..... $2000
twin top hat......$2000
3x6hp motors........$1500
air free spool.......$2000 plus drum extension
batteries........$1000
cable 70mm lugs........$400
Titan solenoids x2........$440
12mm dynamica x 40m........$900
alt upgrade .........$300
......................
$10,540
not an exact figure as prices will vary but you get an idea. either way, not cheap.
The problem is all these mods are standard these days they dont even give you a competitive edge.

innovation is better, better is faster, and fast is all that counts
no , that price is just for a gigglepin tophat which will allow you to run 2 motors , to run 4 motors you will need either 2 twin motor adaptors or another gigglepin and gearboxmaccasMQ wrote:ay a tophat is the same as a 'gigglepin' am i right? so that one u just priced up was a twin gigglepin, so 4 motors yeh?

''most dont spend 10 grand on a 4by''
exactly, thats why i cant justify spending that much on a winch, and think its totally rediculous the price they charge. But i do want to buy a high mount, and mod it like bigger drum, free spool and strengthen it, and get a 6hp motor for it. thats still gonna cost a few grand.

that was just a quote for starting out with nothing.maccasMQ wrote:ok cool, but then why has he bought a winch, plus 3 extra motors, thats 4 all up.
personally, my winch was 2nd hand and came with a 2hp motor.
twin motors plus one spare,

dont forget it is a 'winch challenge' so if you want a realy fast winch think out side the square and build one. dont forget when trying new ideas the r n d can get very expensive, then it gets coppied by others anyways, for a fraction of what it cost you to make.maccasMQ wrote:''most dont spend 10 grand on a 4by''

A rebuilt 2nd hand high mount will be fine to start with, with minor mods. Really if your just starting out, no offense but chances of winning are slim anyway. So may as well just get in there and learn. Not push the truck to breaking point and still not win.
But basic mods would be 6hp motor as the 4.6 is crap (12v will be fine to start with), smaller dia wider drum with tie rods. While the drum is out might as well put a bearing in to replace the bushes.
This and some good team work, should keep you pretty efficient as far as recovery's go.

Keep an eye on our website www.superiorengineering.com.au as Greg and myself over the christmas break are going to work on a 3 motor low mount winch ( as not done before)that will certainly give the best of the high dollar"High mounts "a run for their money for a fracton of the cost.

If you are serious at being competitive I would not build a warn highmount again for a gq. At OBC all the big ones had dramas. The bigger they are the better they are at hurting themselves. Also there is no edge over others. Warn is essentially a 40year old starting point. For 6K and a little thought a serious PTO or fully custom electric is possible. Just look at the thai guys $1000 dollar complete effort. Yes it had no brake etc but a little thought could sort that.
If you want to go electric use a modified truck starter about 11kw and $100 for a full re build kit, and a sew eurodrive gearbox, or bonfig, etc. If you are running an auto fit a brake in the clutch position with a disc and calliper, or use a worm drive box which design efficiency will allow only drive from the motor end. A highmount drum is about $220 odd and use a cnc aftermarket end at both ends to support the drum and standard freespool unit from RDH
Drum $220
Ends $600 pair
Freespool $2000
Motor inc spares $1200
solinoids $240
gearbox about $2000 (I have bought heaps for work around this money inc big a/c motors)
dick brake $400 (prob go wreckers for $100 odd)
total $6660 plus another 1k for plasma etc
If you are serious build one or look at the gigglepin one for around 7k I have been told (inc 2 motors and freespool - this is not a modified warn but a complete ground up new winch).
Also if you do go warn Rog at RDH 4x4 builds freespools for many of the top guys at about 2k complete. He also does cnc machined end plates, and fits gigglepin gear.
That said I bought a highmount for the Jimny simply because I paid $1200 Aust Brand new for it and brought it back in my suitcase. I willl fit 1x6hp and a strengthened brake shaft, big diameter drum and freespool. but my truck will weigh less than 1200kg. Also i intend to do mainly off road racing where it will be removed.
cheers bru

i am making a pre-production model ATM which will be completed for testing before xmas. Then it will undergo some REAL testing (against a 24v-12v 6hp highmount) and i will post all the results. then i just have to get some pricing on the required upgrade parts. so by mid-end JAN i will have all the info.gqpete wrote:would be interesting to see your finished winch.SuperiorEngineering wrote:Keep an eye on our website www.superiorengineering.com.au as Greg and myself over the christmas break are going to work on a 3 motor low mount winch ( as not done before)that will certainly give the best of the high dollar"High mounts "a run for their money for a fracton of the cost.

Initial figures i can divuldge are 9-12000lb max 50+m/min @12v (i am scared of pumping 24v into it).
