GQ high Idle

Post by dwaynes »

Hi guys got a interesting problem that comes and goes

can set the car up to idle at 700rpm and all good but the now and then after a drive the idle goes up to around 1800.
No if i adjust the idle back down on the gas mixer its all good for a day ot too than it wont idle at all until i adjust the idle screw back up.

any ideas?

I've had trouble with mine and the small plastic adjuster on the back of the carby would stick (facing the firewall) I would have to pull over pop the bonnet and flick it down as it would sometimes stick around 2000rpm. Give it a good clean with carby cleaner then a dose of wd40 etc on it and the accelerator cable. Has stopped mine idling strange. I think it has something to do with the fast idle when it's not functioning correctly. hope this helps on carby anyway

I had this trouble on my RB30 a while back too.
Spraying it with carby was only temporary fix mostly...so I yanked carby off truck one arvo and studied it (was fairly sure it had sumthin to do with auto choke)
I worked out that choke mechanism just wasnt dropping down properly after choke warmed up ....so I drilled a small hole in the widest part of actuating linkage and hung a fishing sinker off it....works fine now :D
Sorry no piccies as camera wasnt handy....but the sinker I used was the small one that yu would normally use to trawl for mullet !!!

HTH.

You shouldnt be adjusting the idle speed at the mixer, thats the idle mixture, and if by adjusting it your idle goes up to 1800 rpm it suggests your mixture is way off to bring the idle speed down to 700 rpm. The idle is set on the idle stop on the carby. As a guide set the mixture for the highest idle speed, then reduce the stop screw to the correct idle, then touchup the mixture again for the highest idle and repeat untill you get the highest idle speed with the minimum idle screw. If it wont slow down star looking for a vacuum leak.

One adjustment is idle mixture, one is load mixture, the idle speed is set by the butterfly opening at the idle speed screw on the carby, the mixture can effect the idle speed if the mixture is dramatically mal adjusted. The only mixer/gas carby I'm aware of that has the idle speed set on the mixer is the Gasresearch as it has a butterfly blade to adjust.

I'm gathering you have a 300A like 90% of Patrols, the idle mixture is under a cental cap(removed with a 13mm spanner) which is often missing, and is a flat blade screwdriver, the load adjuster is a 15 mm spanner on the side of where the gas hose connects the mixer from the converter.

had this problem develop yesterday during a night run, carbie main bolts came loose. check to see if the top half and the bottom half move apart from each other. if there is a gap there itll idle around 2000 rpm
