don't quite agree with that.93lux wrote:not essential. Apparently it minimizes off idle smoke.
depends on much you wind the fuel up and how easy you are on the throttle. your your going to run any decent amount of power then i would say yes you need one. the engine will last longer as very few drivers can resit planting boot !
the problem is at low boost (ie take off) you don't have the air for the amount of fuel you can shove in and most people don't take it quietly (especially when there is an oncoming truck!). you will simply end up cranking heads/pistons etc.
A boost comp is a device that alters fuel according to boost pressure, it also give the person tuning it 3 independant points of adjustment over just one. It is beneficial, but the pump needs to come off to do it properly. Its your call if you wish to do it.

ive turboed my 2.8l (3L) about 6mths ago and im not running a boost compensator. running about 10-11psi. blows a little smoke at idle if u rev it but nothing whilst driving. i dunno if thats an idicator of how much fuel is or isnt being burnt.
tweke when you say "you will simply end up cranking heads/pistons etc."
why would this happen?

crack heads due to over fueling (high EGT's), ie too much fuel or not enough air which causes black smoke and excessive EGT's.crack wrote:ive turboed my 2.8l (3L) about 6mths ago and im not running a boost compensator. running about 10-11psi. blows a little smoke at idle if u rev it but nothing whilst driving. i dunno if thats an idicator of how much fuel is or isnt being burnt.

obviously yours hasn't had the fuel wound up much, you could get more power by upping the fuel. however that would mean you would blow smoke when off boost and full throttle. there is a reason factory vehicles have comps.
I use to run 15 PSI and cranked up the fuel mix. Ran Like this for over 5 years towing 14 1/2 foot boats and my comp lux and had no worries. Over heated sometimes when you had your foot into it up a large hill or in soft sand.

do you know what your EGT's were ?Willy Hilux wrote:I use to run 15 PSI and cranked up the fuel mix. Ran Like this for over 5 years towing 14 1/2 foot boats and my comp lux and had no worries. Over heated sometimes when you had your foot into it up a large hill or in soft sand.

Incressing the size of your exhaust will not save your engine, It may lower your EGT slightly but it would be by fuck all. Exhaust gas temps only give an indercation as to what you combustion cycle is doing. To much heat in the combustion chamber (excessive fuel or lack of oxygen) is what will cause the damage. Damage like injector nozzle melting, pre coms cracking, valve's cracking, valve seat cracking, cylinder head cracking / warping.dirty dirty 4x4 wrote:will putting a 2 1/2" exhaust on it reduce egt
I always tune to the lower side on EGT, better to have less power than to be replacing an engine.
A boost compensator in my opinion is well worth the money and time. The better fuel ecomnomy when the engine is under slight load and more power when the engine is fully loaded and the pump is at max rack.
And a lower EGT means all is running well so you know your engine is safe.
