Transfer case 60 series

Post by RM61 »

hi guys
i just bought a HJ61 12H-T auto and found that gears in the t/case were worn and when under high power goin up a hill they stripped.
wats the easiest way to get the t/case out? do i have to take it out with the gear box aswell? or will it come out by itself
thanks

The t/case in your vehicle is whats known as a 'split transfer case' and has to be dismantled to remove it from the transmission. This can be done in the vehicle. There is a bit of a knack to assembling these units in the vehicle so I would make sure that's were the problem is before pulling things apart because it is a fairly big job.
Cheers.

good news on the t/case. pulled the cover off pulled the gears out and used the reco kit from don kyatt (oil seals, gaskets, bearings) in north melbourne. the gear behind the PTO gear was stripped as was the main shaft (apparently a common problem in the 60's). hunted down a replacement gear from a fella in moorabbin who uses the stripped gears to make the new ones. the old gear only uses an inch or so on the shafts spline where as the new one uses more like 3-4 inches of the shats spline. the problem was diagnosed by the clunking when changing from gear to gear (auto) and when i backed off the gas quickly or when i planted the foot. once the shaft/gears spline is slightly worn every time you hear the clunk that is more metal coming off... my dads has developed the clunk and he is starting the same reco :P
hope this helps anyone not sure of wat they r doing

I think the replacement gear is the pto and drive gear in one piece.
Where did you get the cruiser from and what was it worth?

gday matt,
the guy had either the one unit with the main drive gear and the pto or he had just the main drive gear. i only needed the main drive gear.
the cruiser was my dads and i have bought it off him and he bought the same model sahara (power windows, central locking, sunroof, better seats, rear seats) i payed $4000, very little for this vehicle.
