80 series engine conversions
Hi Guys
Has anyone put a 5.0 or 5.7 commodore V8 in an 80 ? Or a 4.0 Lexus V8 ?
Would the manual be strong enough ?
Any experiences, problems etc
Thanks
97 model by the way

from what i know the 80 series manuel is quite strong but depending on how high ur k's are u might want to have the box rebuilt as part of the conversion or swap it for an auto,
for the weight of an 80 the lexus 4l to small same realy for the 5l unless u modify it.
best option u gave there was the 5.7 injected aka gen 3
allso consider maybe the ford 5.4l out of late model falcons.

Gday
The 4 litre 32 valve is a strong motor up high, but sluggish down low....its brother, the 4.7 made it into the 100 series with the same 5 speed behind it....i wouldnt be doing anything unless you need to...4.5 80 series cruisers are down as far as 8k these days...or if you want to keep yours, look on pickles.com for a rollover 4.5, you will get the whole lot for 3k...

for the price of putting a v8 into an 8series you might aswell go diesel
its not exactly cheap to throw a 350 in a landcruiser
rebuilt 1hz, intercooled turbo kit, boost it up some at your closest dyno tuning centre
i just rebuilt my 1HDT for a little under $4k, me and my boss doing all the work and thats including a reco'd pump from Nambour diesel and injector service
if you want some info power you can get from stocko 1hz turbo PM tuff75 here on the forums

my brother in law has just finished the exact same conversion (gen 3 in a 80 series) , if you want to do the same you will have to buy a conversion kit, you can get one from marks conversion in Melbourne , you will also have to get a custom exhaust made up (providing after market headers or buy the ones mark makes himself) , other than that it was actually a pretty smooth conversion, it sounds awesome now and after a few things are ironed out it wil be running perfect, wasnt really that expensive when you consider the benifits of doing the conversion (eg weight is hugely decreased, fuel economy is also greatly increased and power is increased very considerably etc...), the thing is the availability of parts, the longer time between services, the power, the sound!, the hundreds of places out there with performance upgrade products for the gen 3 , the space you have when you install the new engine are all things that the ls1 has over the diesel/6 petrol options, also if you do the conversion then you will be roughly the third in aus to do it, the first was my brother in law, the second was mark (well we arent really sure but he told us when we got the kit that he wasnt finished installing there prototype so we assumed we were the first) , just thought id add that little bit..... also you will have to change the air con compressor, HTH
Yep, they go alright...its just when you want to idle over that rock that they struggle...for the 100 they put 2 valve heads on it and stroked it...now they have the 4 cams back on it but vvti aswell and larger again....now one of those motors would be real nice...however we need to consider cost here....ive seen 454 tpi's in 80's and they are nice for gassing...if you want auto, use cruiser auto not turbo 700....they may have better ratios, but the cruiser auto will last forever behind a big block std.
No probs with the manuals and larger cubes, there are many 308's mate and 304's...the new ls1 would be a nice motor to put in there.....and easy to get parts for later...say a writeoff as a donor for all the polution and wiring, then the marks conversion ontop of that.
