Air Box

Hi Guys

Ive just bought 1998 Nissan Patrol DX 4.2l with a garret turbo intercooled . I have a problem that the prevous owner removed the airbox and replaced it with a pod filter.

I would like to put the airbox back in and not sure what to put in i wouls also like to have a snorkel put on

Your help would be appreciated

Go to ya wreckers and ask for a ZD30 airbox bolts straight factory holes already in the wheel arch..

I'm sure I've read recently on here that someone got a new unit (With Air Filter element) from nissan suprisingly cheap!

I heard 60 or 80 series airbox flows better, but nothing to support the claim. I will hahve a ZD30 airbox for sale hopefully in a couple of weeks.

I am putting an 80series airbox in mine. As for airflow. Birdy had one in his petrol turbo ute up untill recently and it made something like 240rwkw's. Andrew Casser had one also. And at Auto Saloon his ute made 345rwkw both with 80series airboxs.
So I think even for a high boost TD42 it should be fine.

I sold my ZD30 box for $180.

I cant remember what it looked like in a petrol. But on a Deisel. The 80series airbox is fitted to the rear passanger side of the engine bay. They old inlet was cut off so as a 4" inlet can be welded on. New mounting tabs where used to mount to the inner guard.
Then the lid was modded so it could have a 4" outlet. Which is then plumbed into the turbo.
The way the lid on the airbox works it can be pointed in any direction.
It would have been nice to just put it thru the guard at the rear for the snorkle. But there is a fair bit of bracing in that spot. So cutting holes straight thru may weaken the gaurd alot.
The snorkle actually goes thru the same part of the guard.

Another airbox that's meant to flow well is the airbox out of a 4.5 litre patrol. A few of the turbo petrol cars built at ONTRACK have used them, including shrek (although the one in shrek had a modified inlet). I have one in mine and it has a 3.5 inch inlet and outlet.

It looks like there will be no room with that air box for a 2nd battery?
From memory you have your second battery in behind your seats?

Yep, that's correct. I relocated my second battery behind the passanger seat. If you relocated a few things in the engine bay and made a custom tray, you would be able to fit a 2nd battery, however it was easier to put the battery in the cab.

Nice work cobber, just be careful with those f$%@en KN filters. I binned my 800hp pod because of the fine dust it was letting thru.

Take the truck for a hard run in really dusty conditions, then remove the ducting and rub your finger on the inside bellmouth of the turbo.... not good.

when offroad i have a unifilter sock that goes in the snorkel head, that gets the majority of it.

Ive done some dusty runs and had a look past the k&n, after the 2 high flow filters there isn't anything in the intake to worry about.

I bought mine brand new from nissan for $130 or $150 with air filter. I cant remember exact price (its in a post somewhere). Notr sure why ppl pay so much second hand when they are cheaper NEW!!

Or you could try these units i have one going in my GU

they can be designed to either run a commodore v8 filters (cheap) or the F350 air filters...

Advantages of these units is that they are easy to change filters and cheap to carry spares.

Have 4" inlets and outlets or you can have a custom outlet however 4" is ideal

If your after the bling effect, go for a UMP housing, big in the offroad racing scene, and uses donaldson filters.
