In deep shit with a gq HELP
In deep shit with a gq HELP
Got an rb-30 wagon for the daughter which she uses for towing her horse float with one horse. Now I find its gutless and its a real pain to use.
I know the easy answer is to sell it on, but ive thrown a bit of money at this car and its real good in every other area. If someone can make some suggestions, and feel free to insult me after all its xmas and I stuffed up.
If I had to part it what would the price we would get rwc & reg
thanks
Johno

What size tyres do you have on it, just the standard 31".
Maybe a Turbo will help but I doubt it would be cheap.

you would get more reliabilty out of a turbo RB30 then a 6.2 chev diesel
turbo option would be easier x 10
turbo option would be cheaper too

Is it an option to buy a 4.2 petrol GQ auto then put a 3L petrol engine in it plus turbo?
Will it mate up to the auto ok?
Or would it be easier to put a VL auto under it?
I ideally want a diesel for long distant touring but the constant vibrations effect my nerve damage.
I had a Nissan Skyline with this 3L engine and it was the sweetest engine. If I wasn't careful you could easily leave it in third instead of fifth and not notice while cruising on the highway.

1 v the other for towing horse float? I'll try my luck with onecloughy wrote:Obviously never actually driven a 6.2 chev bogged??

Looks like I might have stuffed up even more, the original motor was stuffed and I was given a skyline engine so I got a mate to swap all the stuff around to make it a carby model so she could still use the gas system..
Should I have dumped the gas and stuck with the skyline fuel injected system???

Definetly recommend turbo the RB30 - hello 7,000rpm!
Do a search on this forum for info, there are heaps of info and more people are putting turbo on their nissans since it's cheaper and easier to do a turbo than engine conversion.
Cheers
Grant
p.s. If you were to sell, I reckon you could sell easily for $5k and upwards (I'd buy 1 again providing it's black over grey '90 model!).

Should I get another 4wd?
stick withe the fuel injection make a big difference as well as extractors. ive got a set im selling if your interested. but a turbo straight gas is the best way to go, just got mine back on the road
the only problem is taking off with a heavy load im running 35's on mine and i usually need to drop it back to low range to get it moving or cook the clutch. 4.2 auto i doubt will bolt up to a 3.0l and a vl auto wont bolt upto a nissan transfer. but if you find a easy auto conversion let me know

Hoonz, I did read all that but a bit complicated for me mate. How much would it cost to get something like that done. The gearbox in the car came out of an old blokes car and has done only 90K.
The car is red in color and if anyone wants to do some sort of a deal please pm me, I did'nt spare any expence on getting the car done for her, new radiatr, clutch etc, etc,

They don't have a listing for a Patrol conversion, are you sure they convert the Patrols also.
Marks don't have anything either for a V6. They have v8 stuff though.

Another bloke on here had this done after his 308 spun a main. He loved the V6 he left it in for 2 yrs without any issues.. Well worth lookin at.4WD Stuff wrote:http://www.v6conversions.com.au/matto wrote:what about a commodore v6 in it the motor you could get for $500 and theres a conversion mob called pat gardner converions

the marks kit for the V6 needs to use the commo T700R, I have fitted one of these to an inverted GU transfer for a buggy years ago4WD Stuff wrote:http://www.v6conversions.com.au/matto wrote:what about a commodore v6 in it the motor you could get for $500 and theres a conversion mob called pat gardner converions

The commodore V6 conversion will not suit the 3 litre so it isn't a solution for the purpose of this thread however...cloughy wrote:Cmmodore V6What a farking waste of time, money and effort
I presume you are not talking about a turbo V6.
I had a skyline with the non turbo rb30 and every commodore V6 kicked my butt. I could keep up with some V8's until I ran out of 2nd gear.
However if you are talking turbo rb30 Vs V6 with no turbo then you betcha.
I was considering putting the Skyline motor in a GQ however nobody does and auto conversion for it so it would be a waste of time for me because I want an auto. I also want an engine that doesn't vibrate me and that won't cost a fortune in fuel when I want to pack up and head off around Australia. It still may prove to be a very expensive conversion though. If it was just power and not fuel ecconomy then you would just turbo your petrol GQ motor I would think.
I would be willing to put up with some vibrations if I could get a 1HDT-FTE
