Mounting a Second Battery in rear of a GU Wagon

I got no room inmy engine bay for a second battery so im thinking of modifiying my drawers to hold a second battery.

As anyone done this and whats the best way?

Do i need a special battery as its inside the car?

any pics of current setups?

why no room in the engine bay? there should be just enough room between the airbox and firewall.

I made room in my Rocky, where they said it cannot be done... You can fit it in a Patrol!

If you put one in the back, it can't be lead-acid, as they give off gas when charging. Sealed type will be the trick.

You will have to run a large sized cable from Solenoid to 2nd battery, to try and eliminate voltage drops over the larger distance. You will also need to fuse either end of this cable to be 100% safe.
Care should be taken where you will run the cabling also. Eg Where it can't be severed easily etc.

if it spills,leaks,ruptures etc.. there will be big problems..


i think you need to move the cruise control and something else and then theres room for the battery.

I wouldn't bother, you can make two batteries fit on on the driver site using either 2 orbitals or optima as you can mount these side and there is a snug fit.

I cant even find room in there to mount a compressor!

You can fit a 45Ah battery where the washer bottle sits fairly easily. The battery tray is made by Piranha (Im not sure if they still make it) but as far as I know it never came as a full kit with washer bottle mounting etc. When I worked at Piranha they would only sell the trays to dealers and not to the public, because "if its not mounted properly it will tear the guard apart"

Here is a couple of pics of my old mans 4.8 ST that I fitted Dual batts to, it been like that for 4 years now with no problems with the washer bottle from exhaust heat or guard problems.
