GQ TD42 AUTO
Looking at buying a gq diesel auto wagon, and wanted to know if the auto's have any faults, or how common this combo is to find?
Want to travel australia with my family and starting to get set up.
Any info would be great about this combo, as new to the nissan thing.

There were only few 100 ever made. buy it! they are rare in factory built unless grey imports.``

GQ only came out with a Diesel N/A 4.2 not factory turbo auto.
klms from box, totally depends on service history, mine had over 200k klms on it when I got it and it had just been replaced.
The auto is good for 200k and then it'll need some work. If you wait untill it dies it will cost a lot more than getting some work done sooner.
I have that auto behind my VH45 turbo (280rwkw) and it is fine for that with the right work done to it. I ran one behind my original motor, a TD42 with Safari turbo, (21psi) intercooled etc and it handled that for 2 years including may comps.The trick to making them last is a very good cooler and bypassing the factory cooler. (the one in the radiator)

Which cooler/s did you have on your box ?? got the 4.5 auto rebuilt now and ready to go in, wanna do it once and do it right

His auto is still going strong. It was in that configuration (behind the turboed TD42) for 2 yrs as a race tuck before he did the VH45 swap.
Hopefully he will chip in with the details of the cooler for you and Bruce.
The Infinity runs the same (or very similar) auto, but output shafts are different (longer?) I think?

they are an easy swap really, did lots of petrols, inc Rowan Canavans wagon many years ago, when autos were big $ we used to buy auto ones swap out the auto and sell it, and put in manual, and make money on them.
Just sold a gq which had all the auto gear we took out to convert a wagon to manual, and auto was 4000km old reco, had all the pipes, fittings, brackets, pedals etc.
Have another GQ wagon, petrol carby auto with 200k on it, auto service shows no issues with it going strong also, 400k km + auto if serviced regularly.
My current daily driver is a 95 gq ST efi auto with 270k km, auto serviced regularly, last service showed no issues, early GQ auto's used to strip lining from the lock up convertor clutch, which used to clog the filter and stop them wanting to chnage out of first when cold, and stay in a higher gear not chnage down, as bits of lining went through the system, early convertor fix, and flush could save a rebuild.

As Mitch said I'm still basically using the same auto now. I got it rebuilt and upgrade a couple of years ago. When doing the transplant I gave the auto guys the Patrol auto and the Infinity auto and they swaped the relevant bits. The Infinity torque convertor is massive in conparison to the Patrol so the shaft has to be changed. Apart from that I basically have the Patrol auto with a Wholesale Automatics Extreme manual valve body. It has only been going for a week and I've only run one tank of gas through it so it is a bit hard to give any real results.
I have a crossflow ali cooler about 400mmx400mm that is mounted on the deck with a seperate fan for that and the intercooler radiator.
I'm racing this weekend so will see what happens but as most of the stages are short in driving time the temps won't be tested just yet. We have some testing planned in the sand over the summer to test the cooling abilities.

Hey bogged can you recommend anyone for auto gearbox work / rebuilds?
Talked to the guy that built my T700, he said the patrol auto is not that strong and expensive to rebuild[ RE style box ]
Don't want to spend the money on a box thats not up for a td42 with turbo, to suit towing a van / camper?

Internally the 700r4 and the Patrol box are very similar in strength. I looked into going with a 700r4 at one stage but there was no advantage in strength only in parts mods etc as every has worked with them before.

I think the computers are different, even the TB42 carb VTB42 EFI auto computers are different, as for the boxes, I was told same, but different bell housings.I thought the characteristics of a TB42 and TD42 were similar, as in torquey and low revving?

I wish I had gone to Rodney now... that one week job that wasnt started for 2-3? and is still nowhere near finished, as auto place says no problems to use 4.5 computer, and auto spark says cant? and auto place says best now to use 4.2 GQ EFI computer, and grenade auto wiring loom? and ...How is this swap going?

at $4000 for a rebuild, good oil is well worth the effort. I use Redline synthetic fluid and have done for the last 2 years. The biggest advantage you get with a synthetic fluid is it doesn't break down with heat and age, so while it may cost more up front, all you do is replace the filter and reuse the fluid. Standard fluid will be fine if you don't work the truck hard. If you do then a few hundred dollars on fluid will save a lot in the long run.
