help needed..info..
have an 87 range rover fitted with sd33..and manual range rover 5 speed box.
now very much turboed and propaned up etc..
clutch cant take the torque, and trust bearing on way out..so time to change..before doing so need your advice..i expect(previous owner did engine conversion fron 3.5l v8 to standard sd33) it has sd33 n/a pressure plate with 3.5l range rover plate and trust bearing...3.5l v8 plate is 10.5inch across..i want an uprated pressure plate..what will fit the sd33 n/a flywheel?no info in the uk atall..will the 4.2l pressure plate from a gu bolt up without mods??..how much better is the sd33t pressure plate that the sd33 n/a? and how much better is the 4.2l over the sd33t.
would be best if 4.2l would fit as sd parts are non existent here really..

from memory the sd33 plate is 225mm and the sd33t is about 250 so the pressure plates may not share the same holes on the flywheel, probably no reason that you couldn't drill new holes or use an sd33t flywheel and then maybe a hd sd33t clutch, that would definately handle a fair bit more torque than the stock sd33 setup, I recall somewhere hearing that the td42 n/a clutch is similar in size to a sd33t.how much better is the sd33t pressure plate that the sd33 n/a? and how much better is the 4.2l over the sd33t
as far as td42t clutches go i'd say that it would be a bit bigger again, don't know if it would fit on the flywheel?

The clutch pak you end up fitting will very much depend on the availibility of room within the bellhousing & on the flywheel......
We need to know the actual bellhousing type.
Is it from the 87RR?
Is it an after market bellhousing drilled to suit the SD33 / & RR box?
Is it just and addaptor plate between the SD33 and the original RR bellhousing?
Is it the SD33 bellhousing thats been re-drilled to suit the RR box ?
Assuming its an addaptor plate...( most common option cause its CHEAP !! ).... I'd be seriously looking at what options you have in regards to a 87 RR clutch pak, this for starters will determin the maximum size pressure plate you can fit within the bellhousing. Once this 'size' is known then the next step will be to find out if it actually fits the flywheel aswell.
Once you have the physical sizes, the best 'fitting' pressure plate the choice of clutch plate is a simple selection from the RR options.
Re-drilling a flywheel to suit any type of pressure plate is childs play..... but you need to have the right pressure plate for starters that WILL fit.
For example.....
I run a 350chev with a MK 5 speed box and a custom bellhousing, my pressure plate is an 11" Heavy duty towing plate from Holden, the clutch plate is also an 11" plate from a 1999 TDI Patrol, this all bolts up to a 1977 V8 Holden flywheel thats been redrilled to suit the chev crank.

thanks...yes it has range rover 87 bell housing with adapter plate..bell housing modded to take sd33 24v starter where it should be as per nissan..

found an old engine at back of yard..sd33 n/a..clutch pressure plate is for 9.5inch only..no way of getting anything bigger under it...looks like will have to get flywheel drilled to except larger pressure plate...
suppose i might as well then get a complete range rover clutch kit then...if the flywheel is big enough to except it!!??

Coils yeah mate need the flywheel as the n/a and turbo clutches and flywheels are differant. I picked up a flywheel for 100$ from a wreckers
They bolt straight up. The cranks have the same part No.s.. Now the wrecker will try to tell you that it wont bolt on but they do because ive just done it

guys I got a fairly big problem at the moment. I have an N/A SD33 and I am fitting a 5spd. I am using a Safari Tuff clutch which I think is 11" or 11.5". I was planning to re-drill the flywheel to suit the Safari clutch but the prob is the diameter of the flywheel. Now that it is all out of the truck and on the floor we have realized this won't work due to the diameter of the flywheel, ie the N/A flywheel is simply not big enough in diameter to suit the 11" clutch. So is the SD33TD flywheel larger in diameter than the N/A?? What I read in this post says YES it is.
Getting a SD33TD flywheel is not a big deal but if it won't suit a big 11" clutch I don't want to waste my time or money. I have both N/A and TD bellhousing and also the plates behind the bellhousing. But I only got the N/A flywheel.
I really got to get this sorted ASAP because I am leaving the country in 2 days for a month. My shop needs a solution before I go.

Now that being said i think i have discocered a new prob. The turbo 5sp was fitted with a cast iron bellhousing.. I have used the lighter cast alloy housing. Can any one comfirm that there might be slight differences in lenght of these two??
After fitting the flywheel and new clutch kit it sat in the car for a while, when finally made up new lines I found that the push rod in the slave seemed to be top long.. To cut story short i didnt want to pull it all apart again so i made a new push rod. Bear this in mind with chopping and changing parts, Mine all works fine but would just like to know why the clutch fork seemed to be in the wrong spot.

My 5spd may be a bit long on main shaft length but we plan to just trim it back if that is the case. I have got the alloy bellhousing and the TD cast one so I am hoping the flywheel is the only thing I need. I recall the clutch slave being mounted in different spots on the two different bellhousings but would have to look at them again to be sure.
As long as the dramas are small like a clutch slave rod all is good!
