ZD30 GU losing power under load

hey guys, been talking with dad about his 2000 auto GU patrol zd30 that was rebuilt only a couple of months ago.

it had a complete overhall, resleeved, brand new head, new pistons and then the usual rebuild stuff.
all ancillaries are the originals though.

the reason it was rebuilt was due to it have bugger all compression. (some cylinders under 250 psi)
the head had cracked near the glow plug hole on all 4 cylinders and the pistons fell out when the rods were unbolted, so we get the feeling it had been overheated. and so did the workshop who did all the work.

it has been performing well, but a few weeks ago heading down to rover park towing the campertrailer going up a few big hills (i was flat footing it in my gq on 35s and it was definately working hard) there was a long incline that was quite steep, i couldnt get above 60 going up it, pretty much unloaded. and dad had the camper, he got left behind and at the top we were having a chat and he was saying that it would be pulling alright, then it would just have nothing. go totally flat and gutless, almost as if he was getting no boost.

i was wondering if this was something to do with egt's and the motor/turbo cutting back so as not too cook itself, or if its something else?

anyone experienced anything like this?

the cat converter has cracked at the bottom and dad is wondering whether to replace it with a high flow 2.5" unit, and do the rest of the exhaust at the same time, he is wondering if this may solve the issue of it losing power when loaded up or whether its a worthwhile mod anyway as he is setting it up for touring?

as i said on patrol4x4, and to anyone else suffering similar issues..

read the reference document! This sounds very similar to the overboost cutout feature - if you back right off and then plant it again the ecu will adjust the turbo to provide boost again. Continued driving like this could eventually melt another piston or crack the head from excessive EGT's (too much fuel, not enough boost).

AIR FLOW METER, i replace them daily.!!!!!!!!!!!!!
