:? hey all i need a bit of help i have 31x10.5 on my zook on standard sunraiysers and the rubber rubs on the spring when i try to get full lock i was looking at the MT-117 xtreme or does anyone else know what size offset i need to have to run nice muddies and still be legal thanks heaps :)

Well, let's get this out of the way first, neither your 31's or MT117's are legal on your car.

You need offset rims and/or steering spacers. you can either modify the rims you have (a wheel repairer will do this) or buy "speedy" rims. I think these are 30P offset (I still get confused by offset - I work in backspacing) and will take your track width out as far as possible for an off the shelf rim.

Nope. 28" will be the biggest legal tyre, unless you have a 1.0 trayback - then you can *just* get over 30".

I won't comment on what QLD is doing, but the only way to get 31's or bigger legal would be hilux or bigger diffs, and lots of time with the engineer.

years ago, it was possible to get 32's (and in some cases 33 9.5's) legal on suzuki diffs but not any more.

PS, nobody makes a 33 9.5 anymore. They were a cool suzuki tyre.

Hi guys.

I am about to run 31's on a set of Speedy desert rat 15x8's. (I am aware of the legal issues - lets not go there...) Based on what I have read and what others have advised me on here, the 15x8's are the biggest offset available for a zook, and they work well... Depends on what you are after I guess. If you want big offset then the 15x8 is the go.

I asked a question a while ago and "Taff" said: "i run 31x10.5 radial claws on the speedy 15x8 rims with a 2" bodylift and OME 40mm springs on a 91 WT. they don't scrub anywhere."


Specs off the Speedy website:

Size= 15x7.0 Offset= ET-15 Stud= 5x139.7
Size= 15x8.0 Offset= ET-28 Stud= 5x139.7

I am only repeating what I have been told. I have not put it into practice yet - but I maybe it can help you out in some way..

I had 31's with 2" lift and 2"extended shackles(Lifts 1") The speedy rims off an old CJ jeep have -15 off set and cleared on my NT!

With the 32's it scrapes a little on th efire wall!

But if you have no lift it will scrape heaps when flexin up!

And this is why I like to work on backspacing rather than offset.

With a sierra, you need the least backspacing. Measuring backspacing as a reference is not dependent on rim width.

by my (rough and slightly drunk calcs) the 8" rim has 2.89"backspace, and the 7" rim has 2.9" either way this is a good figure for 31's on a sierra.
the 8" rim will clear a little better because the tyre will have less bulge, but I prefer a 10.5" tyre on a 7" rim.

As a comparison, ROH Trak II rims have 4.25" backspacing regardless of width, and suck on a sierra. (which is a shame because they're high quality rims.)

i run the 15x7 speedy with copper STTs (31") and have no spring rub, at full lock theres around 15mm clearance.

I run 31s on CSA 15x7s. Can't remember offset but it's less than the speedys etc (I think it's in the bible) and get some rubbing on the springs at full lock on my WT.

Shouldn't have bought them but with a taller, narrower tyre they may be a good balance between clearance, width and scrub radius.

31" or 245/75R16 can be legal on a 1.0 trayback under the NCOP (if your State is working to it) as they ran a 6.00-16 stock and the NCOP allows for up to a 50mm increase in dia. to the nominal dia. as specified in the Tyre and Rim Assoc. (?) manual. That is if the difference in nominal dia. of the 6.00-16 and the nominal dia. of a 31x10.50 is no greater than 50mm then it can be allowed depending upon it also meeting other required criteria. Note that we are refering to the specified nominal dia. and not the physical dia. of the tyre so in this case a 31" Simex Centipede which measures over 32" can be used as it states that it is a 31" on the sidewall :armsup:

Yep when i went to 32's i had to cut them off!

My bar mounts another way!

was sweet with the 29's i had before though although i had the 3" lift!

backspacing is measured from where the hub face meets the rim. this differs on all styles of rims for all types of cars.

i thought it was the distance the hub face sits from the centre of the rim in millimetres? ie: -30 means the centre of the rim sticks out 30mm from the hub - so a 7" rim is 178mm wide, therefore 118.9mm of it sits outside the hub, with the other 59.1mm is inside the hub - the tyre sidwall then bulges out from that.

if an 8" rim has -30 offset then theres 71.6mm inside the hub face, and a 7" has -15 offset then theres 73.9mm inside the hub face - theyre about the same as far as spring rub is concerned other than how much the tyre sidewall bulges out of the rim.

...thats right isnt it?

im running cooper discoverer STT armortek... not as aggressive as simex and more of an all rounder for on road too.

i havent had them offroad yet but onroad they handle like a dream and havent been balanced or aligned yet either... (didnt dare go faster than 110km/hr just in case though).

yeah i run 31 bajas and they just dont scrape. the corners have been cut off up to the tube of the bar. i wouldnt cut the bar off coz it adds support to the bullbar. the stock chasi support isnt strong enough as my freinds arb bullbar went back into his bonnet at 20km/h hit and the car was a write off. it was only attached to the chasis.

i bought mine 2 years ago when i started my project build... they were $243ea fitted from memory? Im running the speedy dessert rat 15x7. So theyre not cheap at all. But i had coopers before that and they took a complete pounding over 3.5 years and never gave any trouble, so i stuck to the brand i new was good.
