hilux 308 cooling problem

g'day

i have a 86 hilux with a 308 in it, and i still have the standed radiator in it from the diesel. I was wondering if anyone knew anything about putting a bigger one in or getting another bigger one from another brand that fits with minimal fuss. I have a 3 core on it now witch was ok for the 253 but now i have the bigger 308 in its not cutting it, i also have no clutch on my fan due to lack of room under the hood

any ideas or advice would be much appreciated

Aussie desert Coolers in preston built me an aluminium unit that fits where the standard 4Runner one did.

It has a single 40mm core.

a mate i wheel with, has a 304 holden v8 in his YN60 4runner.
we used a holden V8 rad in it to keep her cool. it works a treat but some cutting of the body was needed. basically we cut out both top and bottom rad supports and but the rad in on a angle with the bottom froward. like so \. then braced the body back up with 75 by 5 flat bar and 25 by 5.
works a treat.

I've just come back from a trip to the High Country :D 2 V8 Hilux's, 1 Diesel Hilux, 1 Diesel 100 series, 1 V8 40 series & 2 bikes. We had 40 plus temps and we did some nice long steep climbs that had everyone watching there temp gauges.
All up none of us had any drama's at all .
I run a Holden V8 with a triple flow 4 core radiator with a steel 7 blade fan, custom cowl & 14" thermo (manually turned on) in a Hilux Surf.
Mate ran his Hilux Surf with Holden V8 and a standard Surf diesel radiator, steel 7 blade fan, custom cowl & 18" thermo (manually turned on) and this set up ran 5-10o colder than mine.
The best advise is to make sure the cooling system is in top shape and if aren't running a cowl on your radiator make one up as this might be your problem and I worked out that the Commodore steel fan did the trick for my motor.

well i have a cowl im making and i have a 8 fin plastic fan so i might swap to a steel one. dose the thermo in front of the rad blowing in help any????
i also think that not having anywhere for the air to go stops the cooling effect, i might look in to shark gills on the side or something.
oh and because i dont have much room i have customed the fan pulley, it dosent have a clutch so it draws lots of air aswell as hp

i was talking to my old boy n he rekens we can make up a cowl from scratch that will cover the whole thing and i get a thermo fan to blow backwards in the fount to help push air in, he thinks that should do the job. i hope it dose...

thanks for the advice n thoughts

i use a commodore VK rad little bit of modding to the rad support but thats still not keeping the old girl cool got me stumped

any other ideas

Cooling this motor proved to be the biggest setback i had with the entire conversion. started off with a vs ss radiator, fixed steel fan and 16" thermo, worked ok, until under high load or high temps, then blew two 5 speeds and went auto, well that added 15- 20 degrees instantly to average running temp especially once the auto had got to proper working temp. next was plastic 7 fin flex fan, and removed thermostat. became bareable but no good unless consdieration up long hills and whilst 4 wheel driving. finally after working the motor, the radiator could no longer do enough, i went out and purchased a 4 core full alloy PWR radiator and made a proper cowl. same dimention as the vs ss, just thicker, and more water tank size.
i think if you try and use standard you will fight it to the grave. give in and spend the money to get something decent made. Must have a cowl, useless without, get a flex fixed fan and have a thermo for when at lights or slow 4 wheeling, and run a lower temp thermostat.
Mine with a very small fixed fan, runs at 80-85 with the thermo kicking in about 88.
Good radiator with a high water capacity, good fan, cowl and a thermo for slow speed are a must.
gq wagon now a gq ute, straight gas tb42 with a thing on the side that makes it go fast

I have a 304 in an ln60. Used mainly for rock crawling. I run a cut down 70 series 4 core radiator with 16" fan, and another 3 core in the rear 1/4 panel with an alloy auto cooler and 10" fan. Both fans are wired together on a manual switch.
Just had a run for 2 days in Sth Island High country and she never went over 95 degrees.

just bought a hilux with a 308 in it, it had a busted motor in it (head problem), ive just put a new motor in it and spent big money on the cooling system with a 11ltr aluiminium radator, iam using the same carby which came off the other motor and for some reason it get hot really fast and the drivers side manifold gets red hot. has it got to do with my carby? is that why it is getting hot real fast or is it something else? if anyone knows wat it might be would like sum feed back thanx.
