A work mate put me onto this site two days ago and i havent been able to keep away. i own an 85 shorty patrol MQ/MK ( i cant figure out the difference except from the compliance plate) i replaced the L28 with a reco one about 2 years ago and it has done 240000 k's, 110 of mine and about 20 on the new donk. Apart from a finer filter. Pirranah ignition and extractors the engine is standard. Had a play with a set of carbies and manifold from a 260 Z ( the wrecker told me he was sending a set off a 240Z{pre anti polution stuff}. drove it to sydney and back and decided against it as i couldnt get it to run right but it did blow up the muffler in spectacular fashion. the shorty is called "the pig" and was named by the other half after her first 4x4 experience in the bush between Yackandandah and Stanley ( i thought it was a fairly tame outing) have to replace some (all) the suspension bushes and would love some advice re rubber v noelathane. would also love to know if any one has improved performance or economy with other carbies etc on the L28.
Any way. i am looking forward to picking your brains and contributing where i can

MQ = Round headlights
MK = Square headlights

I improved the performance of my L28 (under)powered LWB by ditching the motor completely

Dunno about the suspension bushes, I have to do mine as well so I'll be interested in the responses.

mmm i look at the pics and now i miss the old MK. Bushes are a bastard in these things. With good travel they wear & flog the urathane ones in no time. I did a set and wore it out on 6 trips i kid u not. The only things I found that were any good were the factory rubber ones. Painful to fit but i think worth it. Also I only used genuine shackles as aftermarket ones fell to bits, but if you make longer one make em strong & strengthen the front bracket as they break there. Mine did & I had a pro weld it outside & inside the chassis - never broke again. Motors. A mate also had a L28 mq. Thirsty thing it was. Put a 308 in it & woah went excellent and used less fuel believe it or not, mmm except it drank a bit when crawling off road at Landcruiser Park etc
God of Magnificant Ideas!

welcome to your nightmare !!!! this site will eat you :D

as for more power from the L28..... I agree fully with "MK Patrol Guy"....All Day, Every Day, ............... CHEVROLET !!!
We both did the power plant swap as have several others. I started off witha 253 and then a 308 holden motors, and now a 350 Chevy :D , wait till the L28 poops and then do the conversion.

Yeah Patrols are funny things; the engines don't suck but they almost do, so you find yourself with one that has a perfectly good engine in it and deep down you keep hoping it will shit itself so you can do a transplant... :)

Mine didn't even crap itself, the motor was rebuilt not long before I bought it. Engine actually ran like a dream, just wouldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding with the 35s on. I just chanced upon a complete unregistered patrol with the Chev and 5 speed for the right price and the rest is history.

Yeah mine's a bit like that on the drivers side also... bumped into this guy at a servo once with an MK and he was saying that his did the same also, well, that was until he put longer shackles on the drivers side... :roll:

Yep sagging on the drivers side, it is pre 400 but with the Q78s, it was a bit slow :?

Sagging on driver's side, maybe what you really need is new diets?! :eating:
If we can put one man on the moon, why can't we put them all there!!
