I've never broken a front or rear axle in 11 years of giving it a hard time. I have worn out splines on rear once.
But I have broken 3 cv's in that time. 2 while reversing, 1 while driving stooopidly
Mine are 1.0litre axles, with 1.3 cv's.
Welded rear diff and lock rite front diff for 3 years, before that welded front and open front.

I notice it, but the benefit out weighs the problems, for me anyway.
I fitted power steering, thats a bonus.

I would say the front axles are stronger than the CV's, but.....
if you smash a cv and try to keep driving you can very easily chew the spline of the outer end of the axle rendering it useless.

i think Princess is talking about my zook, (series 3s, 32 simex ETs and detroits)

i took it out last night, climbing a double step, the front picked up off the ground, and when the front come back to earth (passanger side first), it went bang and the front passanger stopped spinning, unlocked that hub and reversed out

so i got it ont ot flat ground i jacked that corner off the ground locked the hub back in, and the tyre wasnt spinning, (which is good), lowered it back down and drove off, when i turn/ load up the front end, it would click, and you could feel it through the floor, so i unlocked that hub again and continued to wheel it (no other choice) in the 3WD. then once back on the tar she drove fine.... no im not too sure what went bang
Zooks are for people that aren't afraid of angles and who have nothing to compensate for

Pull your CV out, it may be cracked. But if it is fine, you may have snapped a locker pin in your centre? Pull the axle, check the CV, spliens and hub for cracks or damage, then if that is okay you may have to strip the centre to check the locker pins.

hahaha yeah i wouldnt be counting my chickens after hearing a loud bang crack and clicks... lol last time i had a similar issue, the centre of my rear diff was chewed out - no axle damage but the diff got a nice big weld inside of it =P

It drove home fine cos it was the front and you had the hubs unlocked =)

If you suspect a broken CV ALWAYS ALWAYS check and if it's broken remove it.

Broken CV's can and do lock the steering up when the bits float around the in the housing. This has nothing to do with the hubs being locked or not.

Fortunately, when this has happened to cars in the club it's only been at off road speeds (low range) but if it happened on the road it could be very dangerous to yourself and other road users.
