Drive shafts

Post by NIK »

As Im spoa my front driveshaft top uni is binding on full travel so I was thinking of getting the hilux double carden joint I have in the shed fitted to the zuk shaft and thoughts on this?
At first clance it dosnt look like it has much more angle but it is dirty/greasy.
Also I think Mart is running zuk cvs on his shafts?? Is this a better/worse option? I think it would be a biatch to fix in the bush but not sure how strong they are?

i ran a normal hilux size shaft on the front, ya have to mod that cross member or chop it out like i did, the bigger uni gives u more angle to play with and mine never bound up even when runnin coils.

No issues with front 1.3 cv as you have the reduction through the diff centre , so mine is 4.88 times stronger on the shaft than as an axle , done some pretty hard rock climbing with all 4 wheels spinning on rock and its not even notchy , but yeh , if you don,t carry a spare your buggered , but I do so we'll see how we go , if your handy with a welder takes a an hour to make one , Cheers Paul.

Got a spare shaft today and set to it with the die grinder
On the rounded ears I took some off the outer edge as that comes into contact first and I wanted to leave as much meat as possible. On the inner part of the yokes I ground down to the grease nipple and then matched the rest to it. With the 2 halves of the shaft seperated ans side by side on the work bench at the end of the short end it has about half the shaft thickness again in angle if that makes sense.
When I test it I will take a spare just in case but hopefully it will allow 1" extra droop at the diff which should get me out of trouble.

A Question - can you fit a hilux shaft to the rear of a 1.0L 85 NT Ute?

After doing a search only its only works on a 1.3 wide track late models only?
better than a bought one.

Double cardan shafts dont really allow for extra traevl, their main use is to eliminate drive shaft vibes. By pointing the pinion at the shaft (therefore no opperating angle on the pinion uni), the 2 uni's in the DC joint cancel out each others phasing, helping tame drive line vibes.

exactly wat layto said

you want hilux single unis way more angle then zuk ones and hilux D/C ones

driveshafts are cheap as to make

i have used box tube, round tube and even old axles :D

sorry for the hijack, but what if you were runnin a SWB with lux diffs(spoa with 2" leafs and only a small amount of wb extension)? with the centred pumpkin you cant exactly point the pinion at the case with no operating angle, would a cut down hilux shaft with hilux unis at each end have enough angle not to bind/cause vibrations? or would ya just make up a shaft with 2 cv's...?

Hey DEE , Firstly what type of driving are you going to be doing and what size tyre's are you going to run , have you done conversion or are you about to do conversion , going to be quite a lot of axle wrap with lux diffs and I presume bigger tyre's on spoa setup , this will add to your tailshaft problem , also is this to be your daily driver or basha , Cheers Paul.

I dont quite understand what you mean by flop. Do you mean at the splined/slip joint?
Could a d/c hilux with a CV joint work then?

Im in the same position as above. I have done the spoa lux diff conversion on my short wb zook and pointed the pinion at the t-case but was getting bind in my uni's when drivetrain was loaded. I have a track bar and have ground out the ears on the yoke for more clearance but this is not the ideal setup.

So what model/year hilux if best to get the driveshaft from.?
Which shaft front or rear?

Sorry for the hijack but its along the same subject.

Cheers sanger
