how many kms on a 4.2 TD GU
how many kms on a 4.2 TD GU
how many kms are starting to become too many on a 4.2 TD GU
im looking for a tow car and have seen a 1998 GU with 240,000 kms on it. i know diesels handle kms alot better than petrols but im not sure how many till it starts to become a time bomb.
it also says that "engine Rebuilt by previous owner.
Has done approx. 20,000kms since rebuild."
also what kind of economy does the 4.2 TD get??
any advice would be appreciated!!

Hey mate, my old man is a diesel mechanic in the mines and he says after all his years of experience, that he has seen many of them make 500,000 with out any major difficulties.
TOYota's on the other hand, kept him extremely busy ! No crap! They just did not stand up to the abuse that the miners gave them. Constantly breaking.
As long as you run a good oil, regular service they are bullet proof and thats coming from a mechanic of 40 years experience.
My GU4.2TD gets around 1300k's from 130L of diesel give or take when your diving it properly. My mates on the other hand with 35''s struggles to get 1100 at the best of times (all to do with driving styles)

I'd ask why it was rebuilt, ran out of oil? Drowned? theres no way it would have been worn out. There maybe other issues with it too.

careful at auctions, plenty of flood damaged cars around at moment.. even the NSW ones are turning up.
was there a factory turbo 4.2 in 1998? or is it aftermarket?? something to consider. I have heard for some people putting turbo's on the early NA 4.2's and causing damage cause they didn't have the right piston compression or something... just check it out first.
I recently bought a 2001 4.2TD GU wagon with 210 000km on it. FULL Service history right down to when the tyres got rotated by Beaurepairs in the original booklet. Immaculate. I've had no concerns and dont anticipate any either. so 240 should be OK if well serviced.

Holy crap I have an 06/07 4.2TDI with 8000klms on it and 3" exhaust and only get around 900klm (around 12-13L/100klm) at the best, driving like grandma, am I doing something wrong?My GU4.2TD gets around 1300k's from 130L of diesel give or take when your diving it properly. I kno wthat my brothers 06 4.2 TD was getting about 12's but now it is run in it is getting high 10's to the 100.. If he sits on 100 instead of 110 is gets mid to low 10's per 100. I work with 5 blokes (all mechanics) with the same engine. In a ute that is light, cruising on 100 - 110kmh that is quite achievable, high 10 to 11 L per 100 is extremely normal if your not thrashing the guts out of it to get it up to speed quickly. Mind you where we are it is nothing but long and flat roads, which help considerably.
If i put on the 35'' muddies and thrash around i get bad figures too. But with small road tyres, carrying no weight and drivng easy ......... ah dont worry about it!

My GU when standard apart from 285/75/16's i got 10/11l per 100 coming back from queensland to sydney sitting on 100/110km/h no faster.
Now on 315/75/16's with 4.6:1 diffs, 6inch lift,rear bar, winch and a few other bits i got roughly 14/15l per 100km going to canberra sitting on 110/120km/h pushing it a bit.

the 4.8's are fuel guzzlers we always hav customers complaining about their poor fuel consumption, the only reason we can tell them is highish diff ratios large motor needs lotsa fuel, dusnt matter how many times you reset the compter... recomend stay away from them unless ur winning lottery sumtime soonDavidh wrote:Anyone seen one of those fuel consumption stickers for an '07 4.8 auto GU wagon?

Check on Used patrols, (4.2 Diesel) theres a fixed metal clamped protective cap on fuel pump, some remove them and boost them, fuel pump and timming issues and poor reliability occur.
Get a NRMA inspection and ask inspector to specifically look if its been removed, if so look at another one.
You dont want or need problems of boosting, as they are pretty good diesel standard.

dont know about the turbo models, but i consistently get 11.1l/100 out of my gq ute, and that was when the fuel was wound up. waiting on a week of consistant driving to give a result now its been tuned back to the correct afr's. i dont think it will be much different though.
