Budget 1HZ turbo ideas

Post by whiteknight »

Am wanting to turbo my cruiser but am not allowed to spend the $4000 odd for an off the shelf setup.

I know I can get the manifold and the CT26 turbo from the 1HDT cruiser but was wondering if anyone has used another turbo setup? and what the results were..

I have heard that the Mitsubishi td5 turbo from lancer bolts to std manifold with one hole needing redrilling....thats a pretty close $700-1k setup. What you need to do then is work out if it will be worth the $$ to do that compared to buying a second hand off the shelf bolt on....like a safari kit for 1500 dollars etc
For instance, bang for buck, your better off buying a hdfte from wrecker for 7500 and selling the 1hz for 3500 than paying 4k for safari kit. This is also the go with a 1hdt or a 1hdft motor as they bolt up with only exhaust mods...cheapest way to go is a hdt wreck from pickles, the lot for less than 4k, pay someone 3k to install and sell remaining 1hz/gearbox/diffs/interior/panels/chassis/lights/doors for 7k

would that be big enough for the 4.2 ? I read a post from DumbDunce and he suggested the 300ZX V6 turbo is a nice match for the 1HZ too.

I am going to be sourcing the turbo 2nd hand so just after some models that I can start searching for..

Correct me if I am wrong but, aren't Turbo Glide systems only water cooled?

I think you mean only oil cooled, all turbos require oil to stay functional.

Turbo

Post by Grasshopper »

Corrct, yes I meant to say they only have oil cooling. For my mind I would prefer both. The HZJ105 is my third Landcruiser (after a HJ60 & HJ80) with an aftermarket turbo system & none have given any trouble. All have had water cooling.

have read from many sources that a diesel turbo does not need water cooling

I fitted a turbo glide kit to my 75 and its great.
Start spooling at 1200 rpm and winds right out to 4000 rpm sweet.
Theres no big kick from it as the turbo they supply/suggest is matched perfectly to the 1hz engine. The power is there all the time smooth as. Its a garret t28. and 2.5 inch system. I have no cooling. Motor temp is same as pre turbo.

I have mates with the same car and have dencos and the like. But there no-one home untill 2000 rpm, so you have to flog the things to get boost,
beats the purpose. I rarley go over 2500 rpm unless Im hooting up a massive long hill.

No turbo system 'Needs' water cooling, but all benefit from it, especially diesels that are performance tuned or tourers.
