gearing to suit 38's
gearing to suit 38's
so i think i might have bought some 38" swampers
and i have some lux diffs lined up if i want them
firstly, will the lux diffs handle them(if not what do you recomend)
and secondly what gearing should i run, or should i say what is the deepest ring and pinions that will fit them

Chopzuki ran 44s on 80 diffs, and redzook ran 37s on luz diff, which is what i plan to do
i tihnk the 38s would be fine, but u will need to run longfields

Zooks are for people that aren't afraid of angles and who have nothing to compensate for

I'm running 39x17 BFG Red Label Krawlers on my heavy 4Runner now. And I ran 38" TSL SX's for four years before that. Mine is a trail rig only so I went with 4:88's and I am still running the same gear set in the rear. I didn't break the front gear I sold the complete third member with my old axle housing. My buddy runs 37" MTR and 4:10 gear. His is a trail rig only also. For highway driving we obviously don't have enough gear. And get the Longs

Or run 60 series diffs with Longfields. Wider than Hilux, stronger centres (although bigger pumpkins) and parts are readily available as per Hilux diffs.
Well I'm guessing that they didn't think everyone would carry on like a big bunch of sooky girls over it like they have........
4.88's are a factory in some Hilux's.tjm_tj wrote:that sounds like what i wanted to hereredzook wrote:set of 30spline longfields 4.88 diffs and u should be pretty indestructible![]()
who's the best to buy said ratio's and axles from?
4.88's are available aftermarket for 60 series (did i mention that 60 centres are heaps stronger than Hilux?)
Longfields are available Ex US through Longfield, you can also taklk to Chris at Off Road gear through their site www.locktup4x4.com.au Very helpful guy, excellent service eah time i've dealt with them.

As for gearing, 38" is about 46% over standard. So you need at least that much high range reduction. Hiluxs can get a R&P around 5.2 ratio (check Hilux Bible etc for fitting them), which is about 40% lower than a Suzuki 3.7 diff. So a 5.2 diff and some Suzuki transfer gears would be slightly overgeared, but would turn the tyres at least. I'm assuming this car is not a daily driven town car so the overgearing should be acceptable...
The Hilux 4.88 R&P (32% lower) could also work combined with transfer gears, though with that size tyre it might be straining the little engine allot, to have the gearing at standardish (i.e. gear reduction same as tyre % increase). Personally anything higher would be unacceptable.

Wheeling on completely wicked angles, without even looking stable.
who cares wat high range is like?Highway-Star wrote:As for gearing, 38" is about 46% over standard. So you need at least that much high range reduction. and just for your info
my old zuk wen it was a daily driver on 37" bfg's measuring an actual 37" would do 100 easily (series 3's 4.88's )that was a 1.3L so ur 1.6 should have no probs

buggy time............
thanks for all the replies guys, i didn't think i would get this much help
so in my searchs today i have tracked down a shaved front housing(about 40mm removed) with 4.88's and knuckles(no axles or brakes) and of a mate a got a rear diff with a lock-rite(drum to drum) but it is 4.56. he has also got some drive shafts for me
so now i need a second 4.88 ring and pinion and front brakes
then order the front axles/cv's
as for the transfer, i have a vitara lined up. i plan on fitting the 1.6 along with it's 5 speed and transfer, then mate up the sierra transfer to it.
i hope to pick up the wheels and tyres this week so i can start measuring up the front end for he big trim down(i plan to narrow the bonnet at the front to give it a buggy look)
and no, this little zook wont be on the road
thanks for all the info, keep it up

thats easy enough
thankx
also this is for hilux diffs as u may have read. i think front zook diffs are the only ones that are different from the rear for splines and such.
