80 series front diff
well it has happend, i busted my crown wheel and pinion in my front diff.
so dose any one make a chromolly crown wheel and pinion for the front of an 80 and how much it will cost?
also seeing my front CVs are out i may as well change my diff gears to suit my 36s as well, so what ratio should i be going?
cheers duck

The air locker carrier is stronger than the OE carrier, therefore less chance of the crownwheel flexing away from the pinion.mud4b wrote:ok the bearing spacer i can understand but what is the actual go with the locker strengthening the crown wheel and pinion?
how does it do that?

If you look at a std centre, it has two large windows that reduce strength of the pinion...all the gears ive seen broken are right above where they are supported by air...(the holes)
Toyota have put 4 pinion open centres in the latest cruisers to make the centre solid and stronger...you should too.
The ARB is solid

Confucious say...man who argue with idiot, worserer himself
but it's the same carrier just with an arb centre!!?? i always thought it was because the spider gears flogged out in the stock centre and caused the diff to explode. thats what happened to mine in it's pre locker days.hdj105 wrote:The air locker carrier is stronger than the OE carrier, therefore less chance of the crownwheel flexing away from the pinion.mud4b wrote:ok the bearing spacer i can understand but what is the actual go with the locker strengthening the crown wheel and pinion?

Centre = complete diff assembly as removed from axle housing (or 3rd member as the yanks call it)
Carrier = bit that carries the crownwheel, supported by 2 bearings, be it OE or ARB locker type
