looking at claws... just how good are they?
Moderators: toaddog, TWISTY, V8Patrol, Moderators
for anyone that has seen my rig ever, you will know i run an almost bald set of 33x13.5 claws, and they grip like there is no tomorrow when aired down to about 15psi as theres only about 5mm left of tread in the middle in some spots. Still very happy with them and would look at buying them in a 35

I've always thought, with tyres, you get a rough idea of what you like and what people are running, then you must make that leap of faith for yourself, buy a set and try them.
Sometimes it's a hard road, but if you listen too much to everyone, you may not buy the best tyres for YOUR application.
Tyres are the biggest discussion point regarding cars and 4x4s espeically, and no matter what type you talk about, lots will say they are rubbish. Probably more so than people that ACTUALLY have used them, and make comments.
I can't stand the comment, "Oh my mate had..."
No value, whatsoever.
I've always gone and looked at the tyres in person, picked the one I like best from a few I had in mind, and have been happy every time (Both 4x4 and passenger cars).
I was a n00b when I purchased my first set of tyres and completely disregarded Coopers due to very strong negative opinions on here about them. I have since seen many trucks running various Cooper tyres on trips and they have performed well and most people have had no trouble.
Next time, I won't take all opinions as gospel, as a lot of them have no value, as they are based on 'stories'.
Good luck mate.
(If you like the Claws, just buy 'em!)

My GQ has a 4.2 T/D and if it start to slip I usually give the throttle a quick punch and and once the revs come back down I'm away again.cloughy wrote: Bullshit, how much HP do you need then
Instead of just saying bullshit tell whats your experience with them, not "there just crap", why are they crap ? and why are the MTZ's better ?
At least that way people can make a decision about what to buy, If there that much better I will have to look at going that way with my next set as i haven't had them yet.
Not having a go at you I just want to know, I might say claws are crap after I've had MTZ's to but if I don't know why people like them I'll never buy a set.

RR with 6.2chev diesel I did 20odd.oook n them, RR with a 4.4 did about 5k and a few quick drives on my RRtray with 351 windsor when I had the Simex's off so I could dyno it, 33x12.5x15, they lacked lateral grip EVERYWHERE, wet roads, fast gravel, mud, they looked like they'd have got 50k at best and I'd have more faith to put the pace on with these MTZ's or BFG's or anything else for that matter

I've personally had Centipedes, Silverstone extremes, MTZ's, BFG's Kumhos, Radial Claws, and a host of other less extreme things
Most people have run Claws and love them have replaced an 80% worn set of BF's and driven on fark all else, then get all defensive when you bag them out

I'd rather buy Mongrels

i ran 35 radial claws for about 6 months and was shattered with them and couldn't recoment against them more. weakest sidewalls ever. they worked well in slippery stuff in a straight line but no steering and too much side slope drifting. at low pressures i couldn't trust them at all because they came off the rim so easy and puncture sooooooo easy.

oh, and the old bfg's were 100x better than my radial claws. i haven't had the new style ones so can't comment but i cant see them being worse. a few mates run mtr's and are happy and one runs cooper muddies and hates them that much he's taking them off and getting new tyres. but thats them not me. i'd be going bfg muds
I've had old and new, old ROCKED.. I'd buy them tomorrow, wouldnt bother with new ones, although GUJ likes them on my old GQ.. yes all true for the old radial claw configeration,,,but have you driven on them since the new configeration ?? have seen many indications of people
saying how good MTZ's are,I even think I saw coighty mention it,
the thing is MTZ's & radial clawsboth have the same carcase construction its a
power cross construction,, basicly the same as the old rad/cl & coop stt,but
with the addition of 2 cross pattern plys added to the standard vertical ones..
this has doubled side wall stregnth , knowing correct tyre pressure for your vechicle virtually eliminates side slope dramers..& to this date I havent found any brand of tyre that out performes each other to make it the true standout,
when it comes to wet rock or wet klay(unless your talking stickies,,but thats different again,,& ive herd that Miky/T,Dicky/C,Coop & procomp carcases are all out of one factory!! but not 100% on that

My radial claws came off about a year ago so they are probably the old ones but I was not impressed with them (they might have been a mixture of new and old as the wear strips were in different places on a couple of the tyres). I got less than 40000km out of them compared to the 55 my MTRs did before (both 35s), and overall the MTRs outperformed them offroad. Mud is the only time claws are better than MTRs but the gaps in the radial claws are not as big as the biased claws and they do not clear mud that well compared to any other mud terrain tyres. If you are dead set on getting claws, get the bias ply claws but IMHO the radials are not worth the dollars they cost.
My 2c FWIW is: if you are driving heaps of mud go the ET2s or Trepadores and a second set of road tyres. If you are driving more rock go the MTZ or MTR as an all-rounder tyre.
