looking at claws... just how good are they?

This is the pic of the Khumo mud terrains. My brother inlaw has them on his Hilux. He made it up steep slippery smooth rock 1st go with 31" Khumo's and a front locker.
It took me 3 attempts with 33" MTZ's and lockers front and rear in an 80 Series.

The extra weight of the Cruiser and a slightly different line may have played a part.

The Khumos have lasted a long time on the road, they are noisy but grip remarkably well in all conditions off road and do fine for on road.

That is why you wont see them both being sold in the same shop as its a conflict of interest.

The Mickeys radials use a 2 ply side wall using 1500 denier material while BFGs us 2 x1000 denier. That make the Mickey T side wall 30% tougher than the BFG equivelent. Of course if you hit that stake in the ground at the right angle and speed chances are even your toughest tire will cop some damage.

Like any tyre if you dont lower the pressure to suit the vehicle and conditions then of course it will be crap. Likewise if you run them on the incorrect rim size. I know a few peolpe who have rolled 35s off a 10in wide rim but never had a drama with 8in wide rims.

I've been running a set of 33s for a while now, before that it was ProComp MTs and then BFG MTs.

The BFGs where a pile of shit compared to the ProComp MTs, which were far superior in the wet (factory siped)...and the Claws own the ProComps by miles.

IMHO they're much, much better in the wet that BFGs (not that it's saying much) and the same if not better than the PC (which I must admit is surprising). But offroad is where they really shine, especially on the Wrangler, drop them to 15 and they're sweet and on sand I've had them at 10 with no problem at all.

Love em, my only issue is they're not wearing out fast enough and I want 35s!

4x4 shop round the corner from my house (one of the bigger ones on the coast) that i buy all my little bits & pieces from (and bought my first set of tyres from) sell only Mickeys & Coopers...

I agree with bogged on the 2 x sets of tyres, 1 for play, BUT, take it from me, swapping tyres constantly gets old pretty quick. Unless you have a good trolley jack & rattle gun.



Khany, I wouldnt be worrying so much about what type of tyres you buy mate, if your into the 4x4ing thing and think you will be for a while its all a learning curve. Determine the size/width/rim size you want, then determine how aggresive you want to go and buy em. If you make the mistake once, you won't make it again. If your THAT unhappy with them, an ad on here in the for sale section will see them gone pretty quick and you won't be too far out of pocket...

Every body has diferent opinions on tyres, the only way you'll find a set your happy with is buy trying different sets for yourself. To be honest I think putting posts up here is only for others opinions is only going to confuse you more..

i do understand that it is all matter of personal taste/needs/likes etc

i was just after opinions as no one around here runs anything really aggresive, bout the most hardcore they get is my mates hilux with mongrels.
they are proving to be a really good tyre but im not willing to get a set as they dont come in the size i want and dont wanna risk getting a dodgy set of remoulds.

other mates have wrangler mtrs, federal couragias etc but they arent real good with the clay around here.

and i dont have the cash to run 2 sets of rims/tyres at the moment as my 45 is still getting built. no doubt i wll run 2 sets later down the track though!

i will also not run bfgs... ive had them before and the sidewalls are absolutly useless, ive staked everyone i had, and so have mates who have run them. thats just my experiance so has turned me right against them...

so how about these silverstone extremes people?
what have we experianced with them? how many kays, puncture/stake resistance ect...
also would i notice any differance between the 11.5s and 12.5s?? (they only come in 11.5 for people who dont know...)

got told by a tyre shop yesterday that (what they have been told) is simex are (or will be) discontinued, some other company have bought them out (and sime) and will only be keeping a couple of the sime line, so all thats available is whats left on the shelves around the country and in warehouses. thats just what they got told and they havent a any definite conformation as yet...

This was discussed bout 9-12 mths ago too, dont remember the details, cbf searching for it, but it was dung if I remember that they will be discontinued.

I personally don't think there is a disadvantage of the 11.5" tyre. This has been talked about before concerning sand driving and it was surprising how well the skinnier tyres went when the air was let down.

I think there will be slightly less wandering so a bit better on road.

This completely true!!!!!
Simex is what Sime call their tyres that are exported. ie the X stands for export. So they are going to just make one brand ie Sime. So the tyres will only be sold under one brand everywhere so you won't be buying Simex you will be buying Sime.
Marketing crap so in reality we won't ntice a difference except we'll be getting new stickers when it happens.

i have ran claws from 31's to 35's all in radials on 2 different vehicles (mud4b - sierra and my last 80 series. they are great in my books, i got good k's out of them, the side slope was not a issue as long as you lowered pressures to suit. in the wet on the tar they are not so good when hard braking only, other than that i found they grip really well.

the sidewall was a little issue but as some have said if they have fixed that problem then i would buy another set. i currently run the 35's x 17 mtz's on my 80 and im not happy with them at all. the only thing they have over the claws is that they are slightly quieter on road, i feel they do not grip being on or offroad, they make the steering shimmy (yes i now know it is the tyres) and are just as slippery as the claws in the wet. im looking at going back to radial claws or some other tyre already.
