here i was a 4by thats on stands and just about to give up looking for a idler arm when sum one said to go fulcrum and wala $15 later all fixed cheaper than buying one for $200

As a vehicle isn't mentioned - there are probably numerous "fixes" if its the bushes. However on a Feroza they just dont last.... What is really needed are bearings.
Its interesting that the roza idler bushes dont last and the steering joint
on the idler arm also seems to flog out. Look at the steering box side
and the joint is OK.
Perhaps its just sheer dumb luck but...

Just changed the idler arm assembly on mine, as the ball joint had flogged out.
Apparently its possible to have the ball joint reconditioned, molten plastic is injected into the joint forming a new seat- so my old one stays in the spares pile just in case..... ( anyone know about reco's ? )
The urethane bushes in the chassis end hadn't lasted that well either - they had gone quite oval - and in only 12 months, and were a substantial contributer to the slop.
Was tempted to replace the rubber / urethane with bronze bushes, even bought the material - but may as well wear out the new bushes on the new idler first.

Ive used BALLJEK (balljoint reco) on forklifts when i worked for CROWN.(10yrs ago)
It was always a last option when you couldnt get new parts for old sh*t box forks.
They had a stem that screwed on the grease nipple that had a heat coil wrapped around it and hooked up to the battery.
You would let it heat up the inject it into the joint.(very bodgey if you ask me) and i think there was a( FOR OFF ROAD/MACHINERY USE ONLY) warning on the box.
I need to replace the L/H draglink on mine there about $350.

meece - start saving the pennies or look for a reco place...., I think the rod ends are a similar price but its been awhile.
Just be certain its the ball joint in the idler, the bush in the chassis end gets loose pretty easily and as others have stated, its a cheap easy repair.
Damm glad we don't have the equivalent of your Warrant system....

yeah it's a pain in the A$$ sometimes, wouldnt be so bad if they were consistant with the failures, trouble with the WOF system is you are really in the hands of the WOF Officer, if he takes a dislike to you or the type of vechile you drive they can get really picky and pendantic, they are not supposed too but they do ... 4wds are the worst as most people see them as land destroying, gas guzzing, carbon emitting death traps that should be banned off the roads and the owners stockaded and flogged in the village square .MightyMouse wrote:.

heres hoping it is the bushes .. the thing that bugs me is I bought the car off a dealer, with a new warrent on it 5 months ago .. no way have I done enough k's to cause the amount of play it has in it now... means the dealer has obvously got a WOF "mate" that overlooks the odd thing of 20.

You know im serously considering selling the houses and moving to Vanautu, not only do they not have WOF's ...if the car goes you can drive it but they also dont seem to let woman drive *oh I know im going to roast in hell for that remark* but the entire time we were over there the only female drivers we saw were tourists, not once did i see a native lady driving!

Take heart - your not the only one who seems to have been the subject of the "interesting" roadworthy ( WOF ). When I bought my rosa both engine mounts were broken - apparently the engine falling out isn't a road hazard

we were following this Datsun 4x4 ute that was so rusty there was no tray floor or front guards left, so they had roped a couple of planks across the back, chucked this hidous lime green couch on the back and had what looked like the entire village piled on the back of it!
