Had a slight shudder on take off in my triton. Has been there since I got it 2 weeks ago but I figured it might be a clutch now I wasn't used to :? Its not severe, just feels like a tiny bit of axle tramp. I'm used to the clutch so that ain't it. Only in first and reverse on take off too..... not a hint in other gears.

I've googled around a bit and found a few references to it being pretty common in these tritons and in new hiluxes too. Apparently dealers brush it off as being a characteristic of the car (as they would) but some people who have taken them to driveline shops have been advised that its down to average driveline geometry in the design of the car. Apparently the rear shaft and uni angles are too flat.

Anyone come across it before? Any fixes?? I read that a $5 shim can fix it (on the rear spring mounts maybe to rotate the diff, there wasn't any real detail). Changing my tyres from 265/70 r16 roadies to 31x10.5 r15 x terrains seemed to help a fair bit but god knows why. It helped enough that I don't think I'll worry about it now but I am curious if anyone else has come across it before and dealt with it.

I'm going to go to a driveline shop when I can get time just to ask about it and get my unis checked etc.

The mechanic I used in Bris used to complain my Paj had something similar, but I never noticed it. I'm not aware of it being a common problem, but some would argue I'm simply not aware. :D

i've got an 06 mk triton dual cab diesel and have noticed the same thing.
i also thought it was the clutch but it only does it in 1st or reverse from a standing start. if it's rolling it doesn't happen.
i haven't investigated further apart form what i've read about the ml doing it as well.

When I had my Triton 2001 MK N/A Diesel I had noticed a slight shuddering in first and reverse as well. Mitsubishi told me it was due to first and reverse gear ratios being very low. I guess he had no idea, but then again neither did I so as far as I was concerned it was gospel. It never bothered me though.

It never occurs on dirt etc as I guess there is enough slipping of the tyres to mask the movement.

Your muddies probably mask it due to a softer compound as well as larger tread blocks that flex more.

cool I'm not as crazy as I look. Greybeard you're right on both counts, it doesn;t happen from a rolling start and ml's are still doing it.

mmmm. I'll post up what the driveline people say when I get there. It doesn't bother me particularly either but if there's repairs to be done I will claim them from the car yard under stat warranty now rather than chase Mitsubishi for something so small that they will try to blow me off for :lol:

From what I have been told it is a design flaw on both MK and ML models.
You probably notice it more so when there is no load in the back.

It could possibly need a flywheel machine. They get hot spots on the flywheel which create the shudder. I know the 80's and 100's landcruisers where renound for it, and if you didn't remove every last hot spot it would still shudder.

had the same prob with my mk after only 60000 kms and what it is is the tail shaft centre bearing. lay under neath and grab ur rear drive shaft and move it up and down. when the bearing shouldnt move much if at all. check that out causr that prob what it gonna be

I thought it was due to the centre tailshaft bearing also, so I went to purchase a new one until I felt it and it was just as soft and pliable as the existing one, so I decided against it.

farther had a 2001 model pajero, petrol, manual, it shuddered alot, the dealer said there was nothing they could do about it and that most pajeros had the same problem.

I just changed my clutch (154,000km), asked for a non genuine heavy duty one after a tip off from a mate... The shudder I had gotten used to from new has suddenly disappeared...
I wish my lawn was EMO, then it would cut itself...
