chain block as a hand winch?
g'day all
i was lifting a huge green oak log with my chain block today and this got me thinking would they work to pull rather then lift. now mine is only a 1/2 ton but a 2 tone lift block should move a fourby right?
Matt

I've done this before... The chain keeps jamming and clogging up with mud and rubbish when used horizontally..
I now carry a 1 1/2 ton lever action chainblock with about a 2mtr lift which has got me out of the s**t many times...

Old 40's last forever as long as you keep fixing the buggers...

Have you tried this? (in theory maybe its true)v6hilux wrote: it will pull horizontal easier than vertical!
I have and they defianatly lift easier than they pull. The hand chain gets caught all the time and so does the main chain as it exits the block. This doesnt happen when lifting. I used to use one to pull dead cars up my driveway and into my shed. Total PITA. I wouldnt recomend using one as a recovery item unless its a last resort. It may be easier with 2 people as the other person could help guide the slack chains but for a one man operation they suck.
