80series Rear Diff Rebuild

Post by Moose45 »

I need to do pinion bearing in the rear diff of my 80series, was wondering
if its a job worth tackling myself?? or leave for a specialist.

Also whats involved in getting my LSD to work again (eg Re-Shimming),
ideally I would love an air locker but funds wont allow that yet.

Does anyone no of a good diff place in melb, prefer S/E suburbs?

If you were just doing a pinion bearing, its not hard if you have some mechanical knowledge and/or the Gregories manual and access to tools. Dont bother tackling a rebuild or carrier swap yourself, as these are a specialist job unless you know what you are doing. Also dont bother re-shimming the standard LSD. At the end of the day, it will still be an LSD. If you cant afford an air locker, go with a lock-rite or similar. Still shit loads better than an LSD, but about 1/2 the price of an airlocker. As for a shop in S/E Melb, try Keysborough diffs in Dandy. Dont expect any kind of warm and fuzzy customer service from them, but they do great work and know diffs.
Just my 2c.

Good luck ;)

EDIT:- also, if you go to Keysy diffs, check out the hottie on the front counter!!! :evilbat:

i used to shim my lsd and it worked awesome......................... for about 6 months. it's prob not worth it as it just wears back to how it was. i just put some shim paper on between the last plates and the housing and also put a spacer in the spring. it's a bit of a waste of time. i ended up just getting an air locker.

also if you have access to a lathe make yourself a solid spacer to load the pinion bearing instesd of the shite crush sleave.
