Attaching Flares - Dzus Fasteners

Hi All,

I'm looking at attaching some flares for on-road duty only so i'd like to be able to remove them easily once i turn off the bitumen.

What I am looking for is a means of attaching the flares to my panels in a temporary manor (quickly attachable and removable).

The mounting surfaces are both going to be vertical and flat.

One suggestion was to use some Dzus Fasteners - but so far this is looking like a pretty expensive exercise, so i was hoping someone might have some other ideas?

just drill a hole through both and use wingnuts and bolts

Sticky substance resembling used chewing gum. Usually used for
attaching posters to walls. I think I've seen a US version in yellow..

Ow and buy the way I got some if anyones interested (BLUTAC that is), supplied in 19cm flat strips, manufactured by BOSTIK (speacial titan bond plus) top quality, I have three stirps in total and afew arriving via container in two weeks order fast these wont last. $18/strip

I CAN SUPPLY YOU WITH A DIFFERENT STICKY SUBSTANCE BUT IT MIGHT TAKE ABIT LONGER :rofl:

Good work fella's - this stuff is so funny you could almost sell it and live on the royalties (ala hugh grant from about a boy)... :roll:

Sadly my flares are still sitting on the ground waiting for a somewhat useful solution to come from you people... :cry:

press studs?
pop rivet the male part to the guard and press the female part onto the flare?

what was wrong with the wing nut/bolt idea. Easy to attach/detach and cheap. Or maybe press studs. Or what about making a slide on frame type of thingy sort of like Otis' setup. Or you could use velcro strips (I actually am serious you can get some industrial strength stuff that would work a treat)

i had actually be thinking about this one myself.
i was thinking some sort of sail track + stoppers and a rubber flare with some sort of bead on it. then just slide it on/off.

4 tec screws per flare and a cordless drill kept in the car.

Is there a special reason you need to take them off, or is it because of the possibility of damage???

four tech screws, use lawn edging from bunnings and don't give a toss if you damage it.

mine have suffered two flops and still not come off.

Greg, like everything, dzus fasteners come in various styles and sizes.
Are you after removable dzus' or the spring loaded type which remain in place. We use dzus' all the time at work on the sprintcars we build and repair, if you're in the Carrum Downs area you can always call in to have a look at the various types available.
Another option, if you're drilling holes in you guards is to use nutserts or rivnuts as these will give a permanent thread you simply screw nuts into.
They are fixed to the panel using a special tool similar to a pop rivet gun.
They would probably be a cheaper option than dzus fasteners and much better than tec screws.

They come in two parts which together total about 13.00 each... i would need 4 per flare, which is $52, times 4 flares is $208... more than the whole car body cost me - that's why i'm looking for a slightly cheaper option.
