AGM auxilliary battery for 80 ?

Post by the_quokka »

with the marvellously cool day we have today all over the country (I am being sarcastic) It struck me that my plan to install an AGM battery under the hood of my 80 might be like what I did to the chooks on the rotisserie the other day ?

Who has an AGM under the hood and who can vouch for more than 2-3 years use ? Do you use extra shielding ? Is it ok to share with a normal flooded ? Or should one use some sort of temperature sensitive voltage regulator ? Currently I have the solenoid for the auxilliary clicking in at approx 30 seconds after the alternator realises charge.

Thanks in advance

I run Fullriver AGM's (only) for about 12mths.

I like them. Can't comment on life yet.

A would add and highly recommend a heatshield. I have one from alloy all nicelt folded and one from a windscreen shield chopped up ($2) shop. Both work equally well.

AGM's are more subject to thermal runaway. They heat up more as a result of the recombinant gassing and pressurise internally normally. Add that to an overheated case gives a bulgy and eventually stuffed battery.
