Can I swap viscous transfer for LT230?

Post by ... rick »

My Rangie has a viscouse coupled tranfer case, coupled to the ZF auto, and I am toying with the idea of going to a part time setup. Will I need to change anything to fit an LT230? Will it bolt up to the ZF, and will my brand new expensive tailshafts bolt straight up?

Thanks guys.

Rick.

simple answer is yes.....

but

you have to change the out put shaft on the rear of the ZF, the rear tail shaft as they are shorter for the LT 230. and the hand brake assmebly... and the good news is i have everything for sale apart from the output shaft! PM if interested.

Is that part time gear to suit a lt230 or the vc case?

So for what reason do you want to go part time?
Are you planning a big lift or want better fuel ecconomy or just prefer the part time setup.

I did this conversion on my Rangie and got the tail shaft off the donor vehicle. I think I got a bracket for the mount for the new transfer case but I can't remember if I needed it. I also got the thingo with the letters on it so you knew if you were in 4Lo HI part time etc.

Just make sure the new transfer case is in good nick. There are other threads on the advantages of this transfer case.

One thing you will notice after the conversion is the viscous setup gives you a smoother ride. I actually regretted the conversion but it will depend on what you are using it for. I would have been happier repairing my viscous setup.

may be a better ride but they are not built for 4x4ing! if he takes it out now he can sell it as a working unit but if he waits till it dies then he has a boat anchor!!

PS Rick i am going thru all the crap you will need to do the conversion and i have everything bar the tail shaft not the output shaft as i said early on
