Done this to a Ln106 and my 87 hilux.. Theres enough room. You will most likely need the spacing you can buy for 6x9 speakers as well. If your planning on putting a sub in maybe 6" split speakers would work better.
I'm just using 6x9s, without an amp, off my head unit and its plenty loud and clear enough for me :P
I don't have any pics of the cutting but can take pictures of the finished product if you want to see what 6x9s will look like in your car.
Installing new speakers that are bigger than 4" is probably the best upgrade possible for a car :P

my 6x9's in my 2.8D fit fine... but a small amount of door metal fell out at the same time. ;)

MY 7x10's where in the front doors with no spacers other than what was supplied with the speakers. I soon swamped them and became bored with a two speaker stereo.

I covered the previous 7x10 hole with some mdf covered in black speaker carpet and fitted some 6x9's, then I made some spacers for the rear of about 65mm and fitted some new kenwood 7x10's back there.

Awesome sound, Blaupunkt 6 1/2" splits in the front, Kenwood 7x10's in the rear powered by a pioneer head deck with a 500watt RMS JVC 4 channel amp.

Who needs subs when ya have a good thumping and clear system that already turns heads
