few toyota questions for you all
Hi all long time reader 1st time poster lol this forum has saved a few of my friends now haha, now its time for me to by a cruiser iv narrowed it down to a FJ60 series wagon or a FJ62 series wagon, i have a few questions for you all so bare with me please lol
1. iv had a look at a few 60series wagons and there all leaf spring, something i really dont like lol hate the ride of them, is there anyway ( or anywhere in brisbane i can take it to ) that will do a shock/coil conversion?? ultimatly i want a 2inch body lift with a 2 - 3 inch suspension lift, steering dampeners ect ect the whole works, can anyone help with this subject?
2. some of the old girls iv test drivin feel tired ( 2 of them where 6cyl petrol and 3 of them where turbo diesel powerplants ) what do you recone? if i pick one of these up is there anyway of brightenin up the old girls? or just dump the old powerplant and go with a newer engine, if so what engine? ( not V8, with the way petrol prices are going up ill never be out and about lol )
3. if i dont get a diesel i want a duel fuel petrol/gas 6cyl is there anything i should look out for? check?

The best of them is the hj61 factory turbo diesel. Once you ride in coils, it is a backwards step to cart springs...so i would consider all options. Similar vintage is gq or 1990 80 series with coils in a diesel.
The f series motor is hard to get working well, and a transplant is the best option...with all of them, watch roof rust, transfer case whining and 5th gear popping out.

If you really want coils, I'd go an 80.
If you really want more go, you've no choice but another model or engine/swap.
I, personally, wouldn't have a newer 4wd.
My main requirements are durability and simplicity of repair as I do a lot of solo remote-location driving.
These things will just keep on going through enormous amounts of hardship if necessary. If they break, there's not much you can't fix on the side of the track with minimal parts.
Handle like a wheel-barrow full of walruses, weigh a ton (well several really), and are about as aerodynamic as a house-brick.

1: There is always the option of doing a coil conversion but will cost you alot of money if you're not doing it yourself, then adding in all the other mods you'll want to do to it makes for a fairly big investment overall. If you're after coils then why not go a GQ Patrol? Similarly sized and apointed vehicle with the comfort of coils and a plethora of aftermarket bits new and second hand (almost every second ad in the classified section on here is for gq stuff).
2: With the petrol engines its the 2F in the 60 and 3F in the 62. Both underpowered for the size of the vehicle and therefore quite thirsty. LPG will help but engine conversions are pretty popular on these rigs, mostly V8s but there has been the odd Ford 6 banger done. Diesels are still a bit gutless but turbo conversions are an option, just depends how much power you want? GQ petrol motors are (in my opinion) fairly well matched to the weight of the patrol for most people, they rev happilly as opposed to 2F/3F.
3: Whatever vehicle you decide on, if its running LPG already just check how long the tank has before it has to be tested/stamped again and factor this into your purchase price. In Qld it should have had a gas cert (supplementary to the Safety Cert/RWC) for it before sale so make sure this is the case.

hiya, yeh i thought about the 80series but its the all time 4x4 that gets me, have heard they are overly harsh on the diff's, ( most of the 80series iv looked at have never been offroad :S ) but further more was just talking to a mate and he mentioned there is a " part time " kit for 80series cruisers bascily ya have to get out and lock the hub in yourself, have also heard that the pajero's auto hubs can be modified to fit an 80series ( eleiminates getting out of the car to lock them in just stick it in 4L or what ever and they lock in) might be worth a look at but thanks yeh ill start looking into 80series cruisers now ( and sorry for sounding like that nissan ad from a while ago lol ) iv always been a cruiser man haha
To be fair, the GQ is, from all I've read, probably a good alternative.
I'm a cruiser man too, so suggesting a Nissan didn't occur to me.

As for being "overly harsh on the diff's", I'm unaware of this. Obviously FT4wd will cause more front diff wear, but never heard of this being an issue maintenance-wise.

yeh me personally don't really like the shape of the patrol there a tuff truck and all just not my cup of tea, and iv been told the 80series are harsh because ( sorry if there is any lol ) soccer mums that abuse the 80series with shopping center car parks and never take there 4x4 off road think someone called it constant bitchumen abuse once lol looked at about 4 x 80series in the last few weeks 3 of them said " have never been off road " and all 3 had some pretty bad diff whine front and rear lol

I've seen part time front diffs stuffed more oftern than AWD. Sitting is one spot rattles the balls in the races until they wear pits, and the slop kills the seals. That's why plenty of them end up leaky at some point sepite not being used.
Diff's don't mind use. I've never heard of a front diff "wearing out".
Breaking from overload / abuse, yes, plenty. Wear out, no.
They are basically a hilux rear diff.
AWD is fine by me. Love it for towing.

Just as a last minute comment.....
I've worked on 80's and Gq's, I own a 60. I still have'nt come across a car that is easier to work on than the 60! Wiring/fuel pumps/engine etc is all very basic with tonnes of room to get your hands in. If you want something that is extremely easily fixed then go the 60, if not get an 80 with the later petrols (post 95) or a turbo diesel that has had the bottom end checked for movement/wear. Keep in mind that the 80 will need stronger C.V's if your going to run big tyres and lots of noise.
P.S. It does'nt matter how old or new they are, they all break and they all need to be fixed.

yeh my uncle works for diff lapping in brisbane its just iv seen alot of 80 series cruisers in there with the front diff up the creek and its never been off road, just gets costly to fix them all the time im told but when i do get the 80 series his gonna take it for a few days lol couple of grands later itll come back with air lockers, part time kit, diff gears, and new CV's

Yeah a nissan is a cheap alternitive i have not long owned a 80 but with the dramas it's giving me now if it was a pootrol i think i would have "Had it catch fire" when driving it but the toyota's seem to hold there value more hold off if it hasn't had part time kit done already make sure if you don't really know what your looking at have someone with you or get it checked over for play in the front diff pinion bearings when i was looking at buying my one was told to look for it so i did looked at a fair amount and a good majority were very much worn out. One to the stage where if the front shaft was out i could have pulled it out with my hands
