trancfer case smashed gears
I won't comment on "why" until I know more about the case in question (what gears/configuration of gears are in it) but I can add that the intermediate shaft gears are normally the ones that go. The shrapnel will then travel around in the case and rapidly stuff everything.
I don't know what a 1.3 high range and 1.0 low range is, even a Rock Lobster mod will give you 1.0 high range and 4:1 low.
Some early rock hopper gear sets had 2 piece intermediate shaft gears, these will let go eventually.
Post a photo of the whats left of hte intermediate shaft gear and we might be able to help more.
