1.6l in ZOOK (efi) advice on MODS $$to spend
1.6l in ZOOK (efi) advice on MODS $$to spend
gday fellas...
My ZOOK as is... 1.3l over heating/softop/30inch tyres/3inch lift/roll bar/2.5zaust xtractors.. (can i use these with engine conversion??)
one of my concerns are spending alot of money on the car and then having diffs or gearbox ect... fuc% up. (212.000km on clock) are these sorts of problems easy and cheap to fix on zuks??
i want to end up running the ZOOK on 31x? tyres on 15x8 rims (as daily)... not sure what ratios and that ill need?? im thinkin 1.6l motor (i want EFI is it worth the extra $$$$??) while they are thier replace clutch rear main seal ect
If any has any other ideas of MODS i should be getting done with doing all this or im MISSING something please let me know... im keen to get the INFO cause i will be doing this to the zook and i want get out their 4wding..
1... 1.6l (EFI???)
2... clutch/mail seal
3... diff ratios ect for 31's???
Am i missing anything that i will need done???
i will be having this done in perth.. does anyone kow roughly what all this work should cost??
Are these 1.6 motors QUICK at all?? can you cruise on 110 comfortably???
Thanks for your time
Bruno

The exhaust will be fine but the extractors can't be used with a 1.6 EFI motor, they have round ports. Carby 1.3 and Carby 1.6 have rectangular ports.Bruzar wrote:gday fellas...

Diff rebuilds are about $250

replacement diffs are around $150 from a wrecker
Gearbox from a wrecker is around $650
Transfer case $400
31's are about 20% bigger than stock, so look for transfer case gears in the 4:1 or 4.9:1 range, these will lower your high range enough to compensate for the bigger tyres and also double your low range, very useful. They run between $600-$1000 depending on where you get them from, freight etc. figure on about $500 to fit them with a rebuilt kit through the case.i want to end up running the ZOOK on 31x? tyres on 15x8 rims (as daily)... not sure what ratios and that ill need?? im thinkin 1.6l motor (i want EFI is it worth the extra $$$$??) while they are thier replace clutch rear main seal ect
1.6 EFI motors are great, but they are much more expensive to fit than a carby motor if you can't do the wiring etc yourself. they also need an efi fuel system - do a serach, this has been covered heaps.
Why can't you take it 4WDing now?
If any has any other ideas of MODS i should be getting done with doing all this or im MISSING something please let me know... im keen to get the INFO cause i will be doing this to the zook and i want get out their 4wding..

I don't know what you mean by this as you have a running car now, right? If you want to improve the capability of your car then you need transfer gears and lockers before anything else. a 1.6 won't add anything like the capability of gears and lockers.
If you are asking what to change as part of an engine conversion, yes, rear main, clutch, (what parts will be dependent on how you do the conversion) also timing belt and tensioner, and if you are trying to avoid PITA jobs that will come up later, maybe a water pump.
Can't help. motors runs $1600-$2200. An install cost would more than double that.i will be having this done in perth.. does anyone kow roughly what all this work should cost??
A properly geared 1.3 on 30's will run 110. I have no idea what you mean by quick, I can't answer that question. they're QUICKER than a 1.3. Your'e going from 47kw to 65 or so kw so there is a big increase in HP. I don't think I'd ever call a sierra quick though. Are these 1.6 motors QUICK at all?? can you cruise on 110 comfortably???
Personally, I'd get the 1.3 sorted (stop the overheating) get gears on it and get a locker in it and get out there driving. If you start a 1.6 conversion you will be without the car for months, it will owe you a fortune if you can't do the work yourself, and you won't actually be having any more fun in the car than you could have now with gears and a locker.
Just my 2C.

i have a 1.6 efi now but i bought the car like that. now ive owned a 1.3, 1.6 carby and 1.6 efi sierra and if i owned a 1.3 and needed to change the engine i prob wouldnt spend 4k putting a 1.6efi in. sure they are great but a unesessary waste of $$$ if u ask me. if your rich then go for it but u also have to pay heaps more for insurance if they will insure at all. recond 1.3 are nearly as good as a avgerage 1.6 from what ive seen.
also if u compare it to a nissan sr20 or 1.8 turbo which u can get for $1200 - $1800 or 1.6 efi for same price or even more, the suzuki engine should be way less. its waaaaay overpriced. also a 2.0L efi engine from a nissan pintara is only $350 and they are a good engine, so i dont see why a 1.6 efi suzuki engine should be that price.
i agree with steve the lockers would make your car more capable and u would have more fun than if u spent the money on a engine.

I unsderstand your point Gumtree and it's valid, but the market sets the price of these engines, not some mythical calculator.
The cost of engines is totally dependent on the demand and supply. 1.6 EFI's are popular and pintara engines aren't - end of story. There's also a lot less 1.6's around than SR's. If you don't agree with the price, that's fine, buy something else and put it in, but make sure you keep a track of the hours you have in the conversion....
If you have the skills and time and are willing to experiment I'm sure any number of engines can work OK, but there's more to a feasible swap than the cost of the motor. Have you put a CA18DET or SR20DE into a car to comapare?
A recond 1.3 "are nearly as good as an average 1.6?" Can I buy about 10 recond 1.3's from you?
I'm nearing completion on a 1.6 EFI (2000 Baleno) and trimatic into a 91 WT. Yes it's been a lot of work, but stuff like extractors, engine mounts wiring, sump, fan and shroud VSS, tach etc were all made sooooo much easier by using a suzuki motor, and that's where some of the $$$ is.

so.. if i want to change my gearing all i need to change is my TRANSFER CASE gears????? if i change them to suit 31's will it still be ok for 30's??
I will be most likley just put a 1.6 in..... but if it is a big price difference for E.F.I i might not bother??? i have no idea how much better the EFI motor is.. Car will be a DAILY DRIVER.
I wont be doing any of the mechanical work i will put it in a shop.

if you think putting a nissan motor in a sierra is going to cost less than putting in a suzuki motor your wrong
if you put anything that wasn't ever ment to go into a sierra in one its going to cost, be it in $$$$ or time.
i've put over 1000 hours in to modding my sierra including putting a 1.6L efi and 4spd auto into it.
the physical cost has been kept to a minimum, because i can do all of the work myself and i'm resourceful
i very much doubt that you could get a nissan motor in there for less time or dollars.

2 engines sitting side by side a nissan pintara 2.0L efi and a suzuki vitara 1.6 efi and u were building a small buggy and could use both, one is $350 and one is $1800, both are good engines but the nissan is what you would pick.
i understand how the market works, supply and demand. the main reason the suzuki engine is $1800 is that the 4x4 scene want to put the lil engines the their sierras or vitaras and not many have a need for the pinny 2.0L
personal i wouldnt pay the price to put it in a sierra because because i dont see the value, approx $4k if at suzisport coz i cant, but i can understand why some people would do it. id rather get tyres locker sus lights and all that and someone else would prefer the engine. each to their own.

lets address the overheating issue , whos to say you dont put in the 1.6 and encounter the same probs cooking the engine ...
i would suggest one of the best mods is to get a radiator cleanout done , new thermostat , and replace all the hoses with new hose clamps. all good and well to say ohh my engine is overheating and put in another engine and have the same issues arise.

my motor has low compression any way and high k's, so i will do a complete swap ova... maybe get radiator all sorted as well...
When i get back to AUSTRALIA ill call the suzuki shops/wreckers..ect. see who will quote me the best price for all the work then...
ill just have to decide on E.F.I or not... will depend on price!!!
