Installing an extra bit of horn, with switch and relay etc, and i think i might have fryed something in the std system...
It's a Mitsi Challenger, with the switched earth horn. Problem is, the standard button now does nothing. Does not even click the standard relay. I can't find any fuse for the horn system, and can see nothing obvious wrong. There is nothing else affected anywhere, so far as i can tell... I've taken my extra bits out of the system, but nothing.
Not nice. Shy of getting it to an auto elec, or even a Misti workshop, what can i look for? (I have no multi-meter, only a test light.)
Any hope for me at all?

How easy is that to do?ausoops wrote:99% of the time there will be a fuse somewhere for the horn. pop the horn assembly off the steering wheel and check for 12v somewhere on the contacts.
I mean i know I won't blow the airbag, but are there just clips that hold the cover on? I'll have a look...

Ok, with two posi-drive screws out, this is what you see:
The big white thing on the left is the airbag, on the right is the column hub. The foam-covered connector is for the cruise switch, so the only thing left is the brwn/Grn, which goes to black. No fuses visible.
Now assuming (noob hat on) that this is an earth-switched horn, this brown/green should be live, yes? And the button would complete the circuit to earth somewhere within the hub that I've just taken off? Doesn't seem right to me...
Another view. Any one got any ideas, or should i fork to get it looked at by someone who knows?

not sure on the horn mate but number 1 rule on airbag cars is pull the power at the battery then unplug and remove the airbag and place it face up in a safe place if you are messing with wiring near it.
if you stick a test light in the wrong hole and it goes off then you could do yourself a serious (and expensive) injury.

I've seen what happens when one goes off when you are working on the steering column indicator switch, severe brain injury, third degree facial buns, legally blind, and quadriplegia fron hyperextension of the neck (snapped like a chicken neck). The guy survived, but would honestly have been better off dead.........bigcam wrote:not sure on the horn mate but number 1 rule on airbag cars is pull the power at the battery then unplug and remove the airbag and place it face up in a safe place if you are messing with wiring near it.

Lesson: DON'T F*** AROUND WITH ANY WIRING NEAR THE STEERING COLUMN UNLESS YOU HAVE TAKEN ALL APPROPRIATE MEASURES TO DISARM THE AIRBAG(S)
George Carlin, an American Comedian said; "Think of how stupid the average person is, and realise that half of them are stupider than that".
Roger that. Will take to auto elec. Thanks for the help anyway, guys.DAMKIA wrote:I've seen what happens when one goes off when you are working on the steering column indicator switch, severe brain injury, third degree facial buns, legally blind, and quadriplegia fron hyperextension of the neck (snapped like a chicken neck).
