Busted!?

I was just wondering, outa all the people on this forum, i was wondering who has been busted for truck modifications.

*To what extent - what modifications didnt they like?
*What were you doing at the time - driving casually or mucking around?
*And how you were punished - pulled over, fines, points etc, Pits?
*Age bracket you would class yourself - mature age or 'younger driver'?
*And what state your from?

I would be interested to see if there are people that have HEAVILY modified trucks AND get away with it, because they are always seen to be driving safely, ie, no red line changes, no fast corners and no tail gateing!!!
(i hate tailgaters!!! ps anyone got any good stickers regarding tailgating? - like smile as you go under etc)

Ive seen a few huge HUGE trucks more then once around brisbane over a year or 2, and they seem to have never changed.

Im keen to see if police tend to let it slip, if your always seen to be doin the right thing?

Touch wood never had a problem and never even been up cape york faszer island, broken hill.

not even pulled over, had some one run up my arse at the appin turn off at 80km and cops said nothing at all. let me drive home.

arb bar saved my truck but.

got done on the 23rd December for my Patrol

7" Lift Suspension, 35" MTR's, GU power steer box, chassis mounted rock sliders, Have all the flares and mud flaps on.

Got pulled over for a RBT and asked for engineers cert for the car, since i don't have one (do now) i was given defect notice, so its pits time when i get my god damn paper work from the guy in Newcastle.

I consider myself a younger driver, at 27 years old i didn't get my licence till later in life, i drive my 2nd car around like a hoon as its capible of it, but in the patrol, its all serious because it doesn't handle like it did at stock and it needs a bit more attention to drive.

After that its all sweet and the cops can go chub themselves

The other issue to think about is that they will go over everything if you get done... not just what you get defected for...
So it can get very costly for some people.. there have been threads, and a couple of Zook guys in WA had their cars put right off road for good.. one thread was in Tech section, he parted out his zook in the end..

I had a MK SWB,, 35" MT and no flares.. Was L28 put in SD33T, not changed on rego.. 2ish inch body lift. 4" spring lift.. 2.5" longer shackles.. 1 piece drag link from pitmen arm to tie rod ( home made) 3" exhust straight from turbo and stuck side under passenger door.
Drove the old bucket around for 2 years like this was pulled up a few times never ask anything about the car!! Finished up with the SWB and made a MWB shute

Got a GQ with 4 inch suspension, 2 inch body lifts, 35" MTs and bar work all round, chopped guards etc and worst of all red P's...

I've been pulled over once and had some arse of a cop go over every inch of the car, gave me a 'warning' about no mud flaps, wheels outside flares, no spare tyre and a bent tie rod... Been pulled over a few times since and not a word...

Depends on the cop really... I'll be spending a fair amount of time and cash on fixing these problems in the next few weeks/months and since my daily driver just carked it, I'll be taking a few more risks with driving it more to get to work.

Seems to me, that you can get away with it, if seen to be driving sensibly.

I mean, I'm fairly certain that cops can appreciate that the car is made for going bush, Sure it wouldn't pass a road worthy. But If your not a dickhead behind the wheel, and drive your car with caution sounds like you will get away with it. Touch wood for all those who haven't been done!

Im joining the league of high lift and 35's on Friday! Its good to hear people not getting into too much trouble with the law and its good to hear that there are some decent cops out there who play a little common sense v the book...

Good point..inspected a highly modded Torana hatch last year. 5 litre VN EFi where the original 253 had sat, Supra dash, nine inch, different steering wheel. 10 inch rims on the rear...not tubbed. He explained that it had cost him an arm and a leg to get it engineered and he had put the 10's on after the engineer had signed off. Went through 15 Motor vehicle testers before he found one confident to sign off on it.

Was going to cost him another 6k to get the engineer to sign off on the 10's due to the engineer wanting to road and brake test it. Couldn't afford it as it had cost him 30K so far.

In the end, he had bastardised a LH hatch and in my opinion had ruined its potential.
He was not confident that he could get the defect attended to even though the wheels could be replaced, but as for the rest....One you start modding you best have a good exit plan.

my recomendation, if its not bolt on make sure it can be approoved. Try get it all leagal first off.
Remember in the event of an accident (your fault or not) if your vehicles illeagal the court can say "it is your fault, you shouldnt have been there, you pay damages"
A mate of mine got T bone by a chick that ran a red light, his car was not leagal, he got done for $280 000.

A mate of mine got canaried driving through Horsham on one of our great diagonal dashes in a yellow TJ with 3inch lift and 33s for tyres being outside the guards. When he got back from the trip, went down to USA 4x4 borrowed a set of 31s took it to vic roads got it ticked off. The bloke doing the inspection said to him yeah no worries, just go and put your big tyres back on.

been pulled over for speeding, doing an illegal uey-bloody nsw road rules i didn't know, and rbt's. Never a thing mentioned about my car except once in mansfield i was warned for tires sticking out of my flares, by about 2mm though, pretty rough.

Supercharged gq 3in sus 2in body 35in swampers, although i was on 33 ats in nsw.

Must have been some time ago or not a very good solicitor. Now-a-days they need to prove that the modifications were responsible for the accident or contributed towards the accident - and if so - contributed by what percentage. Very difficult in many cases to determine. They can no longer just state that the vehicle had no right to be on the road.

Yeah I was going to say, how many cars on the road that are more then 10 years old, could maintain a 100% perfect road worthy.

Be it bushes worn, or tie rods with play, or leaking break cylinders, 1 or more tyres not quite legal or a worn edge. Disc breaks perfect?, crack in the windscreen.

Surely as you say it would have to be a percentage to which it contributed. Ie if your car has no break lights, and your rear ended, well its kinda your own fault, sorta deal I could understand. But not if someone blatantly drives into the side of your car cause they ran a red, road worthy or not you can only be partly responsible if your car cant pass a road worthy on its first go!

I would be blown away if someone T boned you, and you coped all 100% of the fruit cause your car wasn't entirely road worthy. Different story if they T bone you and go under your car, and slice their heads off on your sill, but you would have a massive truck to get something crazy like that happening.. lol

As a recently retired CEO of a specialist motor insurer I can assure you an Insurer would need to prove the defect in your vehicle contributed significantly to the accident before they could decline a claim or say you were at fault in the "chick and the red light" situation.

Section 54 of the Insurance Contracts Act protects you from that sort of action from Insurers.

If you ever have trouble with your insuerer go straight to the Insurance Ombudsman and tell them the story. Their on the Public's side.

Once it hits the black stuff the 'made for the bush' is not really considered....

I know this is in the nissan section but I got done by roadside QT on the northside of brisbane couple of years ago in my sierra. I got done for extended shackles, unapproved body lift, no rear seats in, unplated rollbar, extended brakelines, faded indicator lens, tube bar and couple of other minors. This was a major defect but as I had only just bought the car and said I bought it like this (which i had) he didn't fine me or take points but I did have to do a full QT pits inspection so took it back to stock and it passed fine. Was cut at the time as it cost a bit of money to get back to stock but as it turns out, I'm now much happier with the car with only 40mm lift as it's low and stable and better offroad than when it had 4.5" lift but anyway, that's my experience.

This is why I'm Keeping std bar work on this rig and not going for tube as on my old one. I also try to keep it as clean as possible and try not to draw attention to myself.
So far (have 4" lift, 2" BL & 33" tyres) there hasn't been any issues.

Must have been a real arse of a copper to only give you a warning?????

I think your right and some real good advice here.

I think that people will have less choice but to go with the second set of wheels n shiz soon.
