Steve.
It does look as if I have enough space, as my p/s box is mounted flat to chassis.
Going to wreckers this Thursday, Pension day for a squizz.
Hopefully they mark thier falcons, as I don't know my fords
Must grab heavier cable as well.
I got it easy, as I'm already multi V belted

You'd be looking for one like this Chris. EF Fairmont or Falcon

I'm not sure the falcon multi rib and the suzuki multi rib are the same pitch.... It may be a drama. Mine runs a single V belt just fine.

the suzuki multi v and falcon multi v are different. the falcon one uses a wider belt with more groves.

the pitch of the Vees should be the same, just means you'll have a few spare grooves on the alt pulley, as long as you line the belt up with the right grooves so the belt is straight you'll be ok.

correct. greg's black car runs a generic multi V pulley on the endless air, a ford power steer pump (AU) and a jimny crank pulley. No problem.

That's good to know, I like good news.
Hoping it is worth it, as I'm giving up OzRock to buy an alt.

Well I'm now packin 100amps.
An EF alternator fer $60.
I can get zook ones a bit cheaper, but I'm happy with $60 for a better alt.
Thanks B4T you were extremely helpful, and all the rest of you for valuable input.

Haven't wired in a heavier charge cable yet, thats later. Still gotta neaten up the other wires and plugs, too. See how it goes first.

Must be noted the v8 alternator is different, need to use the 6.
Also my multi v pulleys seem to line up well, too.

Its now parked in the rain, getting a decent wash at last

PS. A fuseable link is marked in my wiring diagram in the charge wire cicuit, but I don't have one fitted. I bypassed it mega moons ago, when I had a prob and didn't realise what it was.
Should I be fitting one, or maybe use entire lead from an EF et al ?

awesome writeup.
i was just at the auto sparky shop and they wearnt all that helpfull, but now i can give them some more info.

i will use the serpentine belt as i have just jammed the gti motor in there.

as long as everything is properly fused, the fuseable link will only blow if da regulator shits its pants, or there is a short between the fat wires to alt or starter. they are not hard to make anyway.

Thanks, now it makes some sense.
I could get away with the stock wiring, but may as well get best out of new alt by using new better cable.

I had a new alternator wire made up by auto elec, suitable for 100 amps, going straight to battery, as my wiring is old and suspect. This also included a fuseable link, which has been missing from frog for a very long time
Thought that be better than old wires from wreckers.

Heres hoping its a long lasting piece of equipment.
And hopefully lights won't dim in time with the indicators now

NB. A slightly longer fan belt may have been wise, as fitting belt was quite hard......but I'm not wise, I ground off a sticking out bit on alternators case, and problem was solved. Now my spare belts are still useable.

Thanks to all for advice and support.

Can't answer that.
But I do have a Vitara Power steering box fitted to my Sierra.

Ford alternator

Post by Pat Murray »

Fusible link capacity needs to be doubled to accommodate new increased charge capacity i.e. 50 amps instead of 25 amps. Have done this conversion myself.

According to the auto elec, the fuseable link fitted is rated at 70 amps.
I would of thought 100 was the go, but the experts seemed to know that 70 was correct?
Doubt I'd ever run enough to need that much anyway.

12v x 70amps would = 840watts. All my lights only = 400 on high beam.

1.0 litre is wired differently to a 1.3, the regulator is external under the passenger dash.
Alternator bracket is different also.
Space may or not be a problem as the 1.o engine is shorter.

But nothing is insurmountable.
Hopefuly you'll get a response from someody who has tried it.

how the hell do you guys get these to fit?

i have the g13b in the 87 sierra, but that shouldnt make a difference.

my problem is the regulator on the back is in the way of the engine mount, or other way round.

it is the bossh replacment, rarther than the OEM mitsi one. is anyone else using da bosch?

Mine fits with plenty of clearance although it is a 'Notsosqueezy' not a Bosch. Mitsubishi units are internal reg.

And that's the problem - the Bosch replacement will not fit.

You need the Mitsubishi version, which is EL/EF.

The bosch version is EA/EB. You can use the Bosch pulley though to work withthe mitsubishi alternator to use a single vee pulley - it's what I've done.

What amp rating is the stock MK1 GTi alternator? Mine runs fine with this atm but I run no air con, no fan, no power steering, cd player with no amps, one set of narva spotties and a thermo fan. Should I bother with this mod? And from the info in here I should be able to use an el/ef alt straight swap due to the GTi's serpentine belt, is that right?

My main reason for swapping alts was financial. Alts are a very consumable item off road, particularly water/mud issues.
EL alts are cheaper, easier to find, and are rarely full of mud, like zook alts can be.
I use the multi V belts on mine no probs.
I have a swift/barina water pump and crank pulley fitted to a sierra donk, so it was an easy fit.

GTI would be around 60 amps - plenty for a stock car.

If it packs up though, the EL swap is better than tipping $$ into another stock one.

I do lots of silly key starting (like up hill) only drive the car infrequently and have a red top optima, seemed like a good idea when all my spare alternators had gone to people that had wrecked theirs in the mud.
