Leaking seal on HZJ105 Transfer Case

The front driveshaft seal on the cruiser is leaking on the transfer case.

How hard is it to drop the shaft externally and replace the seal?

Please don't say it's a disassemble the box job.

So the best solution then is "oil and degreaser are cheap"

is it really a dismantle the box job? I would have thought it would pop out after removing the flange

no the seal is in from the inside the front casing has to come off

Which case is it? These aren't too expensive to buy complete (as in, I want to get rid of one in my shed).

You need to remove the front "extension housing" so to speak. Not too bad a job, but remove the switches first so that you don't damage anything.

Probably easiest to remove the whole t/case as Wally says, put it on the bench, replace the rear seal as well and refit back to vehicle.

What's the weight like? One man removeable without a hoist?

I did one in a Daihatsu Rocky once with a mate - nearly killed us was that damn heavy.

I've done it one up as you say, but it's damm heavy!

With 2 jacks - one to support engine and gearbox (while crossmember is off) and 2nd to raise and lower t/case you should be fine.

Just drop the cross member
unplug the connector
then pull the front extension housing off
No point pulling the whole transfer out
