GQ 4.2 Turbo Boasting 100RWKW

Post by monstapatrol »

Found this GQ on ebay and it says it has been dynoed at 100rwkw, can anyone tell me if that is impressive or if that is fairly standard. I thought that sounded like it was fairly well stock compared to the stock ZD30 which from memory puts out about 120kw i maybe wrong. If anyone is interested it is ebay item number 110219437697. Sounds like a bit of a bargain except from the amount of work and extras done thought it would put out a bit more than that. Any info and opinions appreciated as i am looking to sell my ZD30 2001 Patrol in the near future and buy something like this GQ, 4.2 is the way to go.

That is rear wheel kilowatts...the 3 litre is about 118kw at the flywheel from memory. You lose a lot through through the transmission , tailshaft and diff.

100rwkw is good it will have around 340-380nm at a guess. It will rear wheel steer nicely on dirt roads.

It sounds ok but depends on reserve weather its a good buy or an average buy

what size tyres was it dyno'd on?

a standard GQ will make around 80HP at the wheels on 31" tyres. which is around 60KW, so to make 100rwkw on 31's is a 2/3rds increase in power over stock.
im pretty sure that would shit all over a zd30 ;)

most standard turbo gq td42's will have around 40% increace kw n 50% increase torque. With other mods 100rwkw is not hard to acheive.

Should it not have a bit more than 100rwkw running 15 pound boost.
I would think that would be achievable with about 12-13psi.

100 rw kw would be ok with 12-13 psi, if it has an intercooler, better dump pipe and 3" exhaust, with 15 psi, and the above it should be making around 120 rw kw.

If it doesnt have an intercooler, it will probably make some black smoke at low rpm when labouring.

being a 93 mod the limiting factor on KW would be the pump, i'd still say that would be plenty for most things - should go better than a ZD GU as it'll possibly be lighter also.

From memory you lose abour roughly 30% power through the drive train. I'm pretty sure there's a few guy on here with "hot" turbo TD42's that'd give you a good idea of power outputs they're getting.

I've seen a few test vehicles with 150odd rwkw. I've also teen a GU comp truck used as a test vehicle at a workshop in NSW or QLD that made some completely ridiculous amount power that would embarrass the most keen of Falcon/Commodore V8 owners.

ti give you an idea my GQ td42 turbo, makes 90kw at the rear wheels, running 12psi, i was tolod if i were to add an intercooler i would be looking at 110ish, and its tuned more for street driven, and running 35" rubber

oh and his add states it made just under 100kws, and it aslso comes with 31" tyres, so there is always the chance it was dyno'd on 31's so that ould make the figures a little more impressive, than what it actually might be

Hi, the dyno was done on the 31 inch tyres, I dont have the dyno results, I threw them out, but it was 97 kilowatts by memory, there was no torque
figure as he just did kilowatts before and after tune to show me the
difference.
i emailed the seller, that was his answer.

you can easily lose 35% even on 31's, so it could be around 140KW at the motor, but its all guess work.

it seems people are getting similar figures on 35's, which suck alot of power, i dont think hes bullshitting, or claiming it to be a powerhouse, but just stating what it makes, which seems to be nothing to be sneezed at :)

for comparison reasons....my 2001 GU ute makes 97rwkw on 35 claws. stock motor, 3in dump and exhaust, 14psi. NO intercooler.

big tyres dont knock around power figures very much, may have some impact on the torque figures, but again, not all that much.

dynoed mine on 32's 35's and 37's.

37% is a fair bet on a cruiser through the drivetrain in losses, and around 32% on a patrol direct drive 2wd.

stock turbo diesel should make around 90-95 kw at the wheels,
Unfortunately even if you go ahead and put custom turbo with intercooler you will not get 120 at the treads as the standard pump will hold you back.
The standard pump does not flow that much fuel.
My custom turbo diesel shorty with gt28 roller turbo, extractor type manifold 3" snorkel, front mount intercoler dynoed with 35" tyres dynoed at 130 horses at the tread but very very torqy, boost off idle and very torqy motor picks up at any gear.
You must be on drugs if yo think you will get 200 kws at the treads without serious pump and internal work.
My last diesel with similar set up and pump work came back at 174.9 kw at the treads, running clean without too much smoke.
There are not that many diesels getting around in the 200 club, if they are teh internals have been totally stripped and rebuild, there are only hand full of trucks getting around in that power figure, ie aaron carlton, kevvy knott too mention a few

Oops, I don't have access to Ebay at work, so didn't know it was diesel, as It didn't say so in the first post....

The other thing people get wrong is to convert to flywheel you don't add a percentage as it takes a certain amount of hp to spin the drive train and wheels not a percent of power. Sure the 30% thing may work with a standard motor but not once the hp increase. Then you need to just work out the loses. A GQ seems to lose about 40 to 45 kw through the drive train, so add that to your dyno figure and your getting close. Big tyres take a bit so add a bit for that.

So 100rwkw with 31's is about 140 to 145kw which is OK but nothing flash. ie about 20 more tan a factory TD42T which is a slow pig.
