80 series removable cage

me and a few friends sat down the other night looking at an 80 series he had just writin off ( rolled it after putting a wheel into a ditch he thought was shallower lol ) anyway his getting another 80 series wagon and wants to put a cage on it, BUT he wants it removable, so basically when he goes out and has fun he can spend 5mins putting it on, come home and take it off, the front will unbolt from the sliders down the bottom and to take it off all you need to do is lift the front up and over the car to the back and unbolt it, good idea i though, so 5mins in MS paint and i came up with a sort of design ( hold the laughter :lol: ) im no artist but its generally what he and now i want lol, is there anywhere in Brisbane that makes such a cage? or does similar work and can modify it? any help would be awsome thanks :)

the top will act as a sort of driving light holder/roof racks and will protect the roof to an extent

it will look silly as an external, but it'll be more than 5 minutes.

put an internal cage in it...

I have one for sale (2 actually) one steel and one aluminium :cool:
hands and mums dont count!!!

I cant see it being very effective in a roll over, there is no diagonal bracing to prevent the tubes that hold it up from bending sideways as the car rolls. an 80series weighs around 2.5tonnes, its gonna need some fairly substantial bracing to prevent it bending.

I think it would give a false sense of security and no real protection.

I could be wrong though :oops: :oops:

more if its the GXL+

mine is 2600+ and its only one or two up from the BASE!

My dads GXL was heavier again :shock:

My 91 GXL is 2.8t according to the weighbridge at the tip.

I have had similar thoughts about exo caging mine. In the end, you'd need so much bracing to make it do its intended job, it would weigh several hundred kilos.

I have settled for trying to be as observant as possible and choosing where I drive carefully.

If you want to be able to remove it why not make some sort of clamp that could be welded to the tube and clamped to the rain gutter. I know its not nearly as strong as cross bracing but four or five clamps per side would help distribute the weight if the tube were to take a hit. And you wont have to cut holes on the roof for the bracing. Cross bracing is the best and safest option.
On my 4Runner I don't have a cross brace. I made tabs that bolt into the location of the factory removable top. The tabs are welded to the exo cage. I've had the poor thing on its side more times then I can count with no damage to the cab. Mine is not removable. It was the best way to do it without the x brace.
