Box swap,What rover modern boxes can go into a Series 3 ?

Post by beefa125 »

Hi There Team,

I should have asked this more general question a while ago

In short,

I have a series 3 Landrover 109' that I am going to restore

Engine choice is made, Holden 308,

but I am umming and AHHing about the gearbox and any assistance would be great

It currently has the 4 speed stock unit but I can see the extra power of the holden giving me some troubles, my question is, can the newer 5 speeds from the defenders fit ok ? I believe the ZF4 Auto can with some brackets and fabricating made up

Can someone confirm this ?

Cheers

The main problem is the t-case. Either you need to change to an LT230 t-case, or use an adaptor plate to adapt the box to the series t-case.

There are probably some adaptor plates out there to mate holden boxes to the series t-case. AFAIK it is no longer possible to buy an adaptor to mate any of the LR boxes to the series t-case.

I would have prefered to try to match it up to a TH400 or whatever and then adapt to LT230 if it'll fit.

That was the plan,

Marks sells an adaptor kit for this but Im notsure if its for a series 3 gearobx channel

Cant see this being an issue in a series as you would have allready had to mod the fire wall to fit the GMH 8 in just make a new tunnel from alloy chequer plate ...

Are you changing the diff raito's to a more workable ratio as the 4.7's wont be much chop with the 8 driving them ...

Lastly if you go the manual way either use a LT95 or an early series non syncro box otherwise the 8 will end the life of any other rover box if driven with a bit of spice ....

Best and toughest auto way would be a T700 with a few mods mated to a LT230 or the toughest rover option in manual that will fit is a LT95 with a taper roller conversion in the transfer ....

Send me a pm if your in need of bits as i have most of the stuff here that u would be after :D :D :D
Cheers
