Need advice on hilux

Post by cody82 »

Ive been looking for 01-03 turbo diesel hiluxs for about 2mnths now and thereare few for sale and when they are they sell quick so i am yet to bag one. I was looking around 23K and that is that slightly cheaper end so its hard to find one.
Anyway a mates dadis selling his 3.4 V6 dual cab 02 with 75,000 on it for 17K. What i am not sure is the 3.4 motors. I was keen on a diesel due to there track recond but should the 3.4 be worth getting over the 3.0L turbo due to availabilityand price? Are these motorsjust fuel drinkers and not worth a look in? All your advice would be good.

Nothing wrong with the 3.4 we had one at work tick over the 300k mark no worries and it had a hard life. Fuel wise they are about on par with the 2.7 unless driven hard. The two my mates own average around the 13-14L/100k mark combined and they dont drive too softly either. Personally having driven the 3.0L turbos for work I reckon they are an overrated pos but thats just my opinion.

Im looking a 5LE tommorow for 16K and would justify that because I could get a turbo on it later. This particular 3.4 has been babied its hole life so its looking like a possible goer, the power output is impressive too.

i got a 03 turbo diesel and factory they are ok but you need to do little things like dump pipe and exhaust, dp chip possible intercooler to really see what its like.

i get about 550 kms to a tank and its just on 284000km i paid 22500 for sr5 3 years ago when it had 185k and its still goin strong never had any probs.

you will find the diesels are more exy cos there more fuel efficient but if you want power then the v6 is the way to go with the lux's.

I bought dads work hilux off him a few months ago.
A 2000 sr5 Td hilux..... with 435,000kms on the clock. It now has 450,000kms on it
Lots you might think, but he has had it since new, its serviced every 5000 kms religously, and done long kms.
Im rapt with it! :D

I borrowed it off dad with short notice last year when the head died on the GU 2 weeks before leaving for the simpson desert and it never missed a beat the whole trip.
So once I got home and handed the money over for the repairs on the patrol, I sold it and bought dads lux.
Besides, name a car yard that would give you a car to 'test drive' on a 3 week trip through the Simpson and central Australia!

The head has never been off the motor, but it did have a gearbox rebuild at 370,000kms.
Im happy with it and it till runs pretty great!
So I think there is even a bit more life left in the ol' girl yet!
I will be adding a few more bits to it soon though, new suspension, tyres and maybe a couple of lockers to help it offroad more.
A lot different from my 95 lux and the GU of course, but still fun all the same! :D

yeah it will fit if its off a 1kz -te motor . if you have the piping thats good too but its easy to do your own , you can get do it yourself kits off ebay. maybe a bonnet scoop off a new hilux or gu would be good toofor it for cooling the cooler cos there top mount.

i got a new dump pipe that come out at 3 inch for about 150mm then 2.5 al the wqay through with strait through muffler. you can fully hear the turbo whistle its great. most of the power gain is in the dumpipe though cos the factory one is terible.

hope it helps

Mate Ive got a 2003 3 litre TD Lux and cant fault it. Mines done 60k so its still pretty fresh - i paid 31k onroad and that was in SA where cars are a tad dearer than the eastern states.

Theyre great on fuel - around 550ks per tank and has plenty of power for overtaking on the open road.

A mate of mine has a petrol Lux and he said it guzzles the juice...

If i were you i'd be patient and wait till a TD comes up - you wont be sorry.. well worth the wait.
